Dr. Eric Cole is an industry recognized security expert, technology visionary and scientist, with over 15 year’s hands-on experience. Dr. Cole currently performs leading edge security consulting and works in research and development to advance the state of the art in information systems security. Dr. Cole has over a decade of experience in information technology, with a focus on perimeter defense, secure network design, vulnerability discovery, penetration testing, and intrusion detection systems. Dr. Cole has a Masters in Computer Science from NYIT, and Ph.D. from Pace University with a concentration in Information Security. Dr. Cole is the author of several books to include Hackers Beware, Hiding in Plain Site, Network Security Bible and Insider Threat. A solid grounding in security

I would like to start off with the bottom line first. There is a LOT of great information in the book, but the layout of the book makes it a bit hard to find the key points even with the incredibly detailed table of contents. Syngress should adopt call outs, text boxes and other publishing techniques to highlight key information instead of producing one huge "run on" manuscript.

In light of that what I would like to do in this review is highlight some of the practical tips in the book. A major theme is that while protection is ideal, detection is a must. Dr. Cole, a practitioner in the field, has learned what we all need to understand. The odds are very high that any organization is already compromised. The key is to detect the information as the attackers try to exfiltrate it.

Some other points, that are not to be missed:
Page 15 Do not allow HTML mail unless you absolutely need it for your business
Page 16 Do not allow documents with macros unless you absolutely need it for your business
Page 29 Activity does not equal security, tackle the highest priority risk
Page 31 Assume the attackers are already in your network

Chapter 11 talks about some common sense solutions including sandboxing and whitelisting. For the life of me, I cannot understand why more organizations have not adopted both
Chapter 12 is essentially a recap. A suggestion to the reader is read chapter 12 first. It is filled with a number of key points that you can pick up when you read the rest of the book.

Great Book that will make you Work, and Think

Very good set of ideas & concepts very badly presented. Core ideas and strategic approach to defending against APTs is very good, possibly brilliant. Reader must be willing to fight through horrible structure and terrible editing to extract them, however. Not an easy read. Like mining gold or diamonds, you'll need to bring heavy machinery to get what you want. Buried in this mess is a great book. Somewhere. In the end: worth the work.

Plenty of people could have written a book on the APT, but Dr. Cole has the vast experience across multiple industries to write the definitive book.

This could have been merely a "fun" and easy to read book capitalizing on the latest buzzwords, terms, and acronyms like APT, and that could have been good.

Instead this book, which while a fun read, has practical advice from in the trenches on how to combat persistent and dedicated attackers who often have vast resources, such as that of nation-states and other formidable adversaries.

No hype, just what works, and with a fascinating section on "The Future and How to Win."

Quite simply, this is the definitive text for shaft alignment work. If you do any type of machinery alignment, you need a copy of this book. Just about every situation is covered in this text. The author does seem to have a bias against "laser" alignment devices, but other than this, there is little to fault in this book. Highly recommended.

There are very few books about machinery alignment. This is the best I have encountered for machinery alignment. The tried and true methods and techniques discussed in this book are what is used in the industry for large rotating equipment.

An added bonus of this book is the detailed history of rotating equipment and related alignment methods.

PreSchool-Grade 1–Mary and Clare spend their days at preschool together. They hug when they meet, hold hands while going out to the playground, and sit next to one another at storytime. All goes smoothly until the day of Mary's birthday, when she gets special privileges and much attention from the teacher and other students. Clare grows resentful and starts an argument, which ends with both girls angrily yelling, YOU ARE NOT MY FRIEND! They each play with other children and have time to cool off. When naptime is over, Clare presents her friend with a hand-drawn picture and wishes her a Happy birthday. Mary graciously accepts the gift, an unspoken apology, and the two are friends once again. No adult guides them toward reconciliation; these children simply figure out for themselves what is important. Various printmaking techniques are used in the artwork to create bold, flat shapes, with enough white space to allow the colors to pop off the pages. The illustrations, in a warm palette, give a retro feel to the story but the multicultural classroom takes the tale to the present. But when Mary's birthday merits queen-for-a-day treatment, Clare vents her jealousy by informing her pink-clad friend that "yellow is prettier." The argument explodes in double-page spreads that zoom close to the girls' furious profiles, culminating in a bitter outburst: "YOU ARE NOT MY FRIEND!" After time apart, a nap, and a birthday card lovingly crayoned in both girls' favorite colors, the children reestablish their "best best BEST" bond. Like Molly Bang's When Sophie Gets Angry--Really, Really Angry (1999), this shows children working through conflict without adult intervention, and the message is further buoyed by a cozy classroom backdrop that will prompt chatter about kids' own preschool routines. Good Book about Friendship and Envy

This is a great book for young preschoolers who are just learning to understand their feelings. It is very simple and straightforward and shows children that everyone feels jealous sometimes but a friend is a precious commodity.

I bought this book for my daughters Ella and Sarah because we enjoyed the authors other book, Ella Sarah get's dressed. Perfect story about true feelings young children experience. Great books to give as birthday presents.

Read it to your preschool child.

This is a perfect book for preschool and kindergarten children. Clare and Mary are best friends. They do everything together and love each other’s company. But, on Mary’s birthday she gets to be first in line, wear a golden birthday crown, and have a special cupcake. In a jealous moment, Clare is unkind to Mary and a fight ensues. The girls go their separate ways. After a while, Clare draws a birthday card for Mary and their friendship is repaired. When their parents come to take them home, the girls wave to each other and call, “See you tomorrow!”

The storyline is simple and relevant to children who attend day care or kindergarten and are venturing into a social world beyond their family. Each page has only a few words and the pictures are easy to understand.

Every child has squabbles with her best friend. This book will enable parents to discuss jealousy and hurtful remarks with their young child. It is important for children to understand that fights don’t have to be forever and there are ways you can repair a relationship.

The pictures are bright and simple collages with detailed patterns stamped on items of clothing with paint. With the simplest of lines and shapes, Chodos-Irvine portrays the girls’ happiness, anger, resentment, and acceptance.

It is easy to see why this charming little book is a Caldecott Honor Winner. Highly recommended.
