About the Author
A rail fan since his teens and a railroad photographer since his college years, Ronald Dale Karr is a reference librarian at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he has also taught New England history for thirteen years. He is a graduate of Bucknell University and holds a Ph.D. in History from Boston University and an M.S. in Library Science from Simmons College. Ron previously worked at the U.S. Department of Transportation in Cambridge, MA, and at Northwestern University's Transportation Library in Evanston, IL. He has authored numerous history articles as well another title in Branch Line Press's New England Rail Heritage series--The Rail Lines of Southern New England-- and he can occasionally be found chasing down trains and abandoned rail lines in the six New England states.

Expanded and a Different Cover

There is more information in this book with some updates and more photographs. The number of pages have probably increased by almost 1/3. It's a decent book if you want to spend a weekend day or afternoon exploring some old rail lines in New England, either by walking or biking. I probably would not have bought this book if I realized I had the second edition already. The new cover threw me off.

A refreshing look at the real SS and its outlook

What is truly refreshing about this particular work is the author's sincere attempt to understand the thinking and ideas of National Socialism as reflected in its 'vanguard' so to speak in the form of the Schuetzstaffel. He managed to locate and study most of the published issues of 'Das Schwarzes Korps', the official journal of the SS, and to glean from its articles, essays, and journalistic trends, the world-view and direction of its editors and writers.

What does clearly emerge from this study is the fact of the revolutionary idealism of men like d'Alquen and other writers and editors, as well as those leading SS men such as Himmler, Heydrich, Johst, et al, who contributed to the journal or were greatly influenced by it. National Socialism remains largely misunderstood in the West, and one has to wonder if the war itself would even have occurred had a clearer perspective been prevalent in the late 1930s.

It would be nice to study this publication directly, but so far as is known there are only rare materials like this book, or 'facsimile reproductions' of some of its articles and editorial cartoons. Surely at some point, the University of Tuebingen would digitize and/or re-publish the entire series - or most thereof that remains extant - of this journal, for the use of other historians and all others with a strong interest in this area. The same useful goal would apply to seminal NS publications such as 'Signal', 'Das Reich', and others.

I strongly recommend this book, along with others such as 'Nazi Culture' by Mosse, to help gain in reaching an understanding of the nature and ideals of National Socialism.

About the Author
Ernest G. Wolff has worked in the area of dimensional stability since 1973 when he joined the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California. Prior to that, he worked for nine years in the aerospace industry on composite matierals at Northrop and AVCO (now Textron). In 1987, he joined the Oregon State University Department of Mechanical Engineering faculty, with further composite materials research. In 1991 he started Precision Measurements & Instruments Corporation, which is dedicated to providing high quality measurements of the dimensional stability of composite and other materials.

Good motivational book

I decided to get this book after hearing a podcast with Ace. It sounded interesting, so I wanted to learn more. Good motivational book, but the "How to" part is missing. It was basically the same (vague) information I heard in the podcast. If you want to get excited about buying a business, go ahead and get the book. If you're looking for in-depth information and actionable content--pass. Ace, your podcast interview got me interested in working with you, but the book didn't bring me home. In fact, it did the opposite. If this is marketing material (as it appears to be), you may want to consider pulling it.

I met Ace through my podcast and his interview was awesome, so I knew I had to read his book. It is full of valuable content not just for aspiring entrepreneurs but for existing owners as well. The financing concepts alone are worth more than the cover price. If you're thinking about buying - do it - it is a fast read with lots of practical tips and strategies.

Beware, this book has little substance. It is an insult to anyone with more than a sixth grade education. I believe all the positive posts come from the author, his friends and family. Save your money and time.

Elkins opens up the questions that traditional art history usually avoids. What about all the art not produced in Western Europe or in the Europeanized Americas? Is it possible to include Asian art and Indian art in ‘the story?’ What happens when one does? To help us find answers, he uses both Western and non-Western artworks, tables of contents from art histories written in cultures outside the centre of Western European tradition, and strangely wonderful diagrams of how artworks might connect through a single individual. True multiculturalism may be an impossibility, but art lovers can each create a ‘story of art’ that is right for themselves.
