This is a good and well-organised attack on the subject - the format is clear and how it has helped me to understand the basics of fund management and I understand from others that it is also useful for experienced fund managers. Brentani has done a great job at producing a book that is well structured, clear, concise with thoughtful examples and a great glossary and thus perfect for the novice, whilst at the same time including all the essentials that would make this book an excellent reference for the experienced practitioner.

About the Author
Michael A. Dirr is widely acknowledged as the leading expert on trees and shrubs for landscapes and gardens. During his nearly three decades as a professor of horticulture at the University of Georgia, he received the highest honors from the American Horticulture Society, the Garden Club of America, and the American Society for Horticultural Science, among others. Dirr currently is a partner in Plant Introductions, Inc., and has introduced many trees, shrubs, and vines throughout his career. He is the author of Viburnums, Hydrangeas for American Gardens, and The Reference Manual of Woody Plant Propagation, all from Timber Press.

Great Beginner to Advanced Book

I worked in a body shop for 5 years as a general helper. When I graduated college with an engineering degree I decided to get back into autobody repair as a hobby. This book was a perfect reference. It covers everything from pre-washing to paint to frame repair to estimating.

Don't expect to be an expert after reading this book. It is designed to get you on the right track.

The book does not cover specifics on painting since each manufacturer has their own technique. For this information you will need to contact PPG, Dupont, Sikkens...

Collision Repair Technology by James Duffy is toned down and easier to read version of this book that would be great for a classroom.

Compelling, intelligent mystery

There's nothing better than a good mystery - unless it's a good historical novel, and Andrew Taylor has crafted both in Bleeding Heart Square. The characters are creatures of their era, sometimes maddeningly reserved, not quite modern but with telephones and cars. The two main protagonists evolve wonderfully because of choices each is making, and there are also two wicked villains to compete for your attention, both of them with designs on the heroine.
I was able to guess one of the twists that came clear towards the end - so satisfying, that - and was surprised at the other - also satisfying.

Pay attention here to the negative reviews. If you prefer characters dashing from explosions and shoot-outs to sex every few paragraphs - this probably isn't the one for you.

If, on the other hand, you enjoy intelligent, complex characters and meticulous plotting, then Bleeding Heart Square is a winner.

I Couldn't Put It Down!

Using the diary of a woman who disappeared 4 years prior, the author sets up a mystery that keeps the reader guessing right up until the very end. Bleeding Heart Square is a dreary cul-de-sac in London that is home to a collection of seedy and vile characters. The superstitions and legends concerning Bleeding Heart Square create a climate of suspicion and violence among the residents.

The heroine is Lydia Langstone, an "almost 30" lady of the manor who flees an abusive husband to live with her estranged and alcoholic father. The hero is Rory Wentwood, a jilted and unemployed journalist turned private detective. These two people examine the disappearance of P.M. Penhow, who disappeared four years earlier and was the previous owner of the building in Bleeding Heart Square, in which they both live. Their efforts begin independent of each other, but as the story progresses, they work together to try to find out what happened. The villain is Joseph Serridge, landlord to both of our heroes and an imposing and powerful figure, both physically and politically.

I must say that I was completely surprised by the ending. While the main characters uncover a lot of information and learn more than they bargained for in other areas, they never do find out what happened to Miss Penhow. The reader does, however, and in a very unexpected way.

There are several story lines at work throughout the book. The personal stories of each character are woven into the whole of the story, but the appearance of the Facist Party in England and the relationships of characters both past and present keep the reader on his toes and guessing at what will happen next. Each chapter begins with an exerpt from P.M. Penhow's diary with comments made by in the second person to "you." Not until the end does the reader find out who "you" is.

I was so impressed with this book that I couldn't put it down. It wasn't a fast read for me. I've read a lot of mysteries, but this one is completely different from anything I've read. There was some confusion in the first couple of chapters as the story sets itself up, but if the reader will just keep reading, it will all become clear. It's a complicated story with a raft of characters and many different plots coming and going. Through all of that, it never lost it's focus on the original premise. I will be looking for more by this author.

Too Slow and Too Little Mystery

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. Sadly, there wasn't nearly enough mystery and the novel didn't start to pick up steam until page 300 or so. At first, I thought the stagnating plot might be a clever device. That Talyor was winding down a spring, building up tension that would inevitably explode into a fast paced novel. But, sadly, that was not the case. Taylor kept winding and winding. And the not-quite-big-enough explosion when it occurred waited until the very end of the book.

Perhaps Taylor simply wound things up too much and the spring snapped. Most readers probably do not have the patience to wade through all this prose or have the fishing boots to wade for that long. And by the time you get to the end, the impending danger didn't seem dangerous enough and the mystery seemed somewhat predictable and not all that mysterious.

And that's a pity. Taylor is really quite a gifted writer. His writing is rich and his prose is elegant. He has a keen eye for detail and fleshing out believable characters. The descriptions are never forced, but really add incredible dimension. When Lydia Langstone enters her house at the beginning of the novel he describes it as a 'dirty wedding cake.' In one simile he gives us a visual image of the building, insight into the state of Lydia's marriage, and conveys Lydia's feelings about coming home. This is potent stuff and Taylor writes this way throughout the book.

He also has a knack for creating a solid cast of characters and an unexpected, convoluted web that joins their lives together. He even hits the setting, spot on, for a mystery novel. He describes a dreary, 1930s, pre-World War II London with incredible aplomb. He even sets his characters within their various social classes and within the political turmoil of the times.

But in spite of the writing, the characters, the tangled web, and the dreary setting very little happens of significance until the bitter end. The feelings of impending doom are not impending enough to propel the reader along. And by the climax, the various characters end up appearing to be simply who they are; they do seem to get what they deserve in the end but in a somewhat too tidy and predictable fashion.

If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Taylor. I have not read the rest of his oeuvre, but he seems to have the raw talent. If he hasn't already penned a great mystery novel he most certainly will. Unfortunately, this was not it.

About the Author

D. Stanley Eitzen is professor emeritus in sociology from Colorado State University, where previously he was the John N. Stern Distinguished Professor. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Among his books are: Social Problems (which was awarded the McGuffey Longevity Award for excellence over multiple editions in 2000 by the Text and Academic Authors Association); Diversity in Families and Globalization: The Transformation of Social Worlds (each coauthored with Maxine Baca Zinn); Experiencing Poverty: Voices from the Bottom (with Kelly Eitzen Smith); Inequality: Social Class and Its Consequences (coauthored with Janis E. Johnston); Solutions to Social Problems: Lessons from Other Societies; Solutions to Social Problems from the Top Down; The Role of Government (with George H. Sage); Solutions to Social Problems from the Bottom Up: Social Movements (with Kenneth L. Stewart); Paths to Homelessness: Extreme Poverty and the Urban Housing Crisis (with Doug A. Timmer and Kathyrn Talley); Sociology of North American Sport (with George H. Sage); and Fair and Foul: Rethinking the Myths and Paradoxes of Sport. Maxine Baca Zinn is professor of sociology at Michigan State University, where she is also senior researcher in the Julian Samora Research Institute. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. Her books include: Women of Color in U.S. Society (with Bonnie Thornton Dill) and Gender through the Prism of Difference (with Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo and Michael Messner). She is the coauthor (with D. Stanley Eitzen) of Social Problems and Diversity in Families, both of which won McGuffey Awards for longevity from the Text and Academic Authors Association, and Globalization: The Transformation of Social Worlds. She has served as president of the Western Social Science Association. In 2000, she received the American Sociological Association’s Jessie Bernard Award in recognition of her career achievements in the study of women and gender.

Kelly Eitzen Smith received her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. She is currently working as a researcher and technical consultant at the Drachman Institute, University of Arizona. The Drachman Institute is the research and public service unit of the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture dedicated to the environmentally sensitive and resource-conscious development of neighborhoods and communities. Her current projects and research interests involve sustainable communities and transit-oriented development.� She is the coauthor of Social Problems (Twelfth Edition, with D. Inte has a strong passion and desire for making the world around him a better place to live in. Creativeness, innovation and determination are his drivers for getting things done. Inte has a "dry and sophisticated" humour that his daughters don't quite understand yet, but they still laugh with him.

Chiara Alfonso
Chiara is studying in London, and is the eldest daughter of Inte. Chiara loves to read, write and more than anything socialise with her friends from all walks of life (such is the diversity of London). Chiara loves sport and is currently practicing ju-jitsu. Chiara is an inspiration to her younger sisters (though they would deny that...) and has a rare talent and flair for tripping up on a flat floor.

Condensed wisdom.

This is an amazing book. Its apparently co written by the author with help from or at least perspective from his young daughter. And it is the kind of book you can share with your loved ones -- in whole or in part. Its not a novel, it doesn't tell a story, rather its a collection of ideas, anecdotes, quotations and life lessons. So its not necessary to read it in order. I did read it straight through in just a few hours, but I know it is something I will refer back to through the years, either for my own benefit, or when dispensing some of the wisdom, either verbally or by having my kids read a page or three based on whatever sage advice the situation may call for. From tips on procrastination, mistakes, courage, lying, etc. to the importance of choosing friends (quality over quantity), and respect (for self and for others), and lots more, theres a healthy idea or two for all situations. It manages to be helpful without being preachy. Though it covers a lot of ground, do be aware that its a bit thin -- not much more than 100 pages from cover to cover.

To be read and re-read! A must-have amazing book to cherish

What a wonderful, positive, thought-provoking book this is! The short stories, simple messages & observations written by a father and daughter, really inspire and invite you to become a better person each and every day.

I read this lovely book in one sitting, from start to finish, as I was unable to put it down. It is a book that I will read, over and over, with lovely illustrations that really complimented each message perfectly. I will certainly be making positive changes in my life after reading this.

Knowing it was written by a parent with his eldest child, I felt it was completely suitable to share this book with my eldest too. My 10 year old who loves to read, really loved this book and I know he will revisit it many times in the years to come as the messages are simple, to the point yet powerful. I feel it will help guide us both on a positive path (especially through the tricky teenage years to come!).

I would highly recommend this book to all audiences. It's a book that can be shared and discussed together yet also read individually, to 'love, honour and respect ourselves' and each other.
