needs editing

This M/M novella is the first instalment in a fantasy series.
Basic plot and world building are interesting and the author has the raw talent of a born storyteller.
While the lead develops amorous feelings for his male best friend, bigoted readers need not worry about it. The most they do is kiss and those kisses are only mentioned and not described. Therefore I see no reason why the author should have tagged his work as gay-themed.

Unfortunately there are several problems and they must be mentioned because they stand in the way of enjoyment:

- editing is quite sloppy. There are typos, word-switches ('cease' instead of 'seize' was recurrent), grammar mistakes and consistency issues far exceeding what may be tolerated in an indie work;

- writing is good here and there but more often clumsy and clunky. The author should make the effort of revising his technique to achieve a better fluidity.

- the fantasy genre is known for its descriptiveness. In every work, many pages are dedicated to characters' training, travel experiences, military tactics, battle scenes, meaningful dialogues. In mediocre books they are usually very boring but they are the warp of successful ones.
Mr Burgess seems to have nor time nor patience to put down these moments and it detracts from the story: things happen too fast. There is a reason why a fantasy volume usually exceeds 400 pages often topping 600; the feeling of reading a draft is thus difficult to avoid.

I think the author should enlist the help of a competent editor and try and rewrite this series giving it more breath and scope. It would be worth it.

What a great, addicting, read!

This is a enthralling epic that you cannot put down. Characters grow on you quickly, and before you know it you are sucked into the story and you can't stop turning the pages. It's a quick gripping read that will have you glued to your kindle like a neodynium magnet on a steel frame! haha. Really, it's a great book. The story is really one of a kind, and at the same time it's a classic about how someone who comes from nothing can save the world. The book is riveting, endearing, and totally loveable. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the book, it really tugs at your heart strings. You suddenly are completely invested in the lives of these characters, and their wants and needs become suddenly important to you. I love the story arc, when the reader thinks you are about to zig, the author zags. It's surprising, compelling, and utterly addictive. This book will find a home in your heart. The story is emotional, epic, and unexpected. The characters become like welcome house guests you learn to love.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book! It's a quick read that will soon have you aching for the author to release his second book! It's addicting and lovable, and I can't say enough good things about it. :) I'm recommending it to all of my friends, it's a great book, and I truly love it and all of the characters in it! ^^

As I was reading Dragon Spirit, I felt like I aS there. Dragon Spirit is an excellent book to get lost in. The author described everything so I was able to immerse myself in the story.
I recommend Dragon Spirit for all ages.

Diverse selection, horrible interpretations

We used this book as the text for our Mythology class. On the outside it looks like an OK book: encompassing both classic European myths with African, Asian, and Middle Eastern myths, with generous examples from each region.

However, the stories are very poorly written; it is obvious that Mrs. Rosenberg is not an author. That's fine, stick to what you're good at, but don't mangle another classic myth, please. Her diction and syntax is very simple, and her attempts at metaphors are laughable. Plus, if I have to hear the phrase "and so it came to pass" one more time, I'm going to scream. The line must appear in each story no less than 10 times.

If you want to read up on mythology, buy translations of Homer and Ferdowsi and Goethe. If this book is assigned to you as a textbook, good luck.

Contains Some Items of Interest...

I have used this book in mythology / folklore classes before as a textbook with success. (I admit to using other books to supplement my lesson plans though--such as illustrated mythology volumes and Campbell's "The Power of Myth"!) There are some dry, tedious parts of the book as the other reviewer who posted before me suggests. However, in my experience, many students have enjoyed the following story selections--most probably because the stories were new to their experiences and the stories appealed to their interests:

"The Creation of Human Beings," pages 4-6 [Shiluk Myth / Africa]
Quoted from tale: And as Juok wandered, he said to himself, "The earth will be a better place if I fashion human beings, both men and women, out of the different soils that I have created" (5). Makes for interesting class discussions regarding other world creation myths and diversity!

"The Woman With One Hand," pages 18-27" [A Swahili Tale / Africa]
So, what's the best inheritance: parents' property or blessings? This story exams this human situation through the relationship of a selfish brother and a selfless sister.

"The Craftman's Wife," pages 88-93 [A Jewish Folktale Featuring King Solomon]
A clever woman outwits the wise King and proves her love and loyalty to her husband.

"Rostam, Shield of Persia" and "The Tragedy of Sohrab," pages 94-157 [Two Persian legends] Like an ancient "Luke Skywalker" or "Harry Potter," Sohrab is "...born with the mark of a hero upon him..." and to know himself, he must know his father, Rostam.

"Osin Mac Finn, Poet of the Fianna," pages 178-203 [Celtic Tale]
An ancient superhero experiences various adventures, including the "Land of Youth."

"The Little Frog," pages 300-313 [A popular folktale from Chile]
Three sons embark on adventures to seek their fortunes and characters, each with their father's blessing. This includes interesting lessons about acceptance and love.

"The Tiger's Whisker," pages 432-441 [A Korean tale with an important lesson in love and patience] Yun Ok's husband has returned home scared and mentally affected by war. The woman wants to win back the affections of the man she loves; however, she needs one ingredient, the whisker of a living tiger, for a magic potion that will help her on this question.

The book has a general table of contents based on geography and a thematic one based on themes in world literature---such as creation, culture heros, death, love, tricksters / clever beings, etc. It may not be the best folklore collection available, but there are some elements of value here for those willing to overlook the book's weaknesses. My advice is to try before you buy if you can... :) Your local library may have a copy.

I would question the reading levels (Ages 9 to 12) stated here on Amazon. Some parents and teachers may feel that a few of these stories would not be appropriate for young children.

Great book!

I used this for a Folklore class and it's a pretty nifty little book. It has the stories but the author really gives the reader a great history on the culture, area of origin, and believes of the time. Very informative book and great addition to any home library.

Nick Srnicek is a lecturer at City University. He is the author of Platform Capitalism and the forthcoming After Work: What's Left and Who Cares? (with Helen Hester).

Alex Williams is a lecturer in the sociology department at City, University of London. He is the author of the forthcoming Hegemony Now (with Jeremy Gilbert).

An incredibly playful, sobering book. The sobering part ...

An incredibly playful, sobering book. The sobering part is the forces that conspire to make work disappear--of course automation affecting manufacturing, transport and now service sector jobs at all levels but also in equal measure a recognition that rates of economic growth are slowing down--there is simply too much capacity. What dies in that slow down is the promise of an integrative globalization, but what have we lost, most of us were not true believers. so far what the end of globalization seems to have produced is wide spread isolationist/right-wing/populism, but there's a chance for that to change.

The author's formulate a theoretical and practical response to our present circumstances--laying claim to this abundance in the form of a demadn for a universal basic income. The end of work as we know it is coming (and really has long been here in one way in Detroit and another in the informal-economy cities of the so-called developing world). What we have with the concept of a basic income is to re-create the terms of this ending into a liberation, rather than the conditions of a new servitude.

Technology and The Threat Of A Jobless Future" is also an excellent book to read before or after reading "Inventing

This is the ninth book I've read on future technology's elimination of all unwanted human labor within 20 years .
It is the first one that has seriously addressed the socio-political outfall and the steps necessary for the transition to a workless society in that short period of time. The book spends most of its length dealing with the history underlying our present economic conditions and then supplies the answer to the question of "What next?"
It provides a superb analysis of neo-liberalism's rise and why post-WWII and more recent social and political movements have failed except for cosmetic changes .
The two are intertwined .
Robert Ford's " Rise Of The Robots: Technology and The Threat Of A Jobless Future" is also an excellent book to read before or after reading "Inventing...."

An extraordinary opportunity awaits humanity

“Inventing the Future” by Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams offers both a practical strategy and hopeful vision of life beyond neoliberalism. The book is a collaboration between Mr. Srnicek, who is a progressive thinker, educator and author with Mr. Williams, who is a brilliant PhD student. The author’s breakthrough analysis suggests that a post-capitalist future is possible.

Srnicek and Williams critique the “folk politics” of today’s Left for its failure to offer a systemic challenge to capitalism. The authors believe an equivalent to the Right’s Mont Pelerin Society is needed to articulate an expansive Leftist vision for a better future. An astute analysis supports the author’s contention that a Euro-centric capitalism must necessarily yield to a new, more encompassing concept of humanity whose “synthetic freedom” will know no boundaries.

Fortunately, Srnicek and Williams offer a strategy to achieve a “post work consensus”. The key components of the strategy include: full automation (to free labor from routine work); a sharply reduced work week; and a universal basic income (UBI). The authors recognize that consensus-building must focus on persuading the media, academia and business of the necessity for change.

On that point, I found Srnicek and Williams’ discussion of the world’s surplus population to be very informative. Capital has no solution to intractable unemployment in the global south that has been caused by a process of proletarianization in an era of post-industrialism. However, the looming prospect of “full unemployment” spreading to the north should be welcomed: humanity has an extraordinary opportunity to break the work ethic and the suffering religiosity of its primitive past. With the benefits of technology freely shared amongst a humanity that has been freed of brutality, greed and competition, one cannot help but be excited about the new horizons that might finally open up for us.

I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

About the Author
Steve joined Brighton from the University of Liverpool where he was part of the management group of" Impacts 08", the research programme designed to assess the social, cultural and economic impacts of European Capital of Culture. Perhaps the most bizarre experience of his academic career was presenting the proposal for "Impacts 08" to a panel chaired by Loyd Grossman.

Steve previously worked at Northumbria University where he was Head of Research for the Centre for Cultural Policy and Management and where he conducted a large-scale research project into the impact of cultural investment on Newcastle Gateshead Quayside. Many years previously Steve undertook his PhD in the Behavioural Sciences Department at the University of Huddersfield in which he was concerned with the relationship between consumption and identity amongst young people.

About the Author
Dwight C. McLemore is a retired combat arms officer with the U.S. Army and is an accomplished bladesman and instructor. He is renowned for his vast knowledge of Bowie and big-knife fighting and has more than 18 years of experience in self-defense and martial arts. The owner of the School of Two Swords, McLemore is rated expert level with the American Knife Congress, is certified in kung fu and holds 1st dan in kendo.

mystical Spanish Circle

I have rated this book at five stars and feel it is a great companion to Mr. McLemore's earlier book. I bought his first book when it was still put out in a 3 ring binder. The drawings are again great but still require a pretty good imagination to follow through step by step. This is not a criticism since I have experienced the same difficulty deciding on photos to accurately describe training sequences in my own book "The Rhythm of One." I too tried to explain how to use the Spanish Circle and I'm not sure that this book is entirely successful at that either. This is a very difficult concept to teach without a live instructor, relying on drawings of foot placement. The concepts in this book are quite advanced and will refine the prospective knife-fighters movements. They define the use of a big knife better than any other book I have read so far. Even if you only learn one technique from this book it is money well spent. If you like big knives be sure you buy both volumes and practice what Mr. McLemore says. I'd like to offer a personal thanks to Mr. McLemore who encouraged me to finish writing my own book "The Rhythm of One" many months ago.

What's not to like?

The author has a great style for expressing his thoughts on bowie combat. The drawings are out standing. Is it the ultimate knife manual? No there are many subjects that could be covered(karambits, pikal style, etc.). But as to covering large western style knife techniques it's fantastic !!

That well illustrates the decidedly lost art of knife fighting this is more than a martial art book but a history book of sorts as well, if you spend any time at all in the outdoors around big knives and axes and such this would be worth reading in case you ever did have to use one to defend yourself against a wild animal with just a knife, whether it walks on two legs or four :D
