Most recently, Josh has partnered in setting up a business venture, Discovered Intelligence, which provides data intelligence solutions and services to the marketplace. He is also a cofounder of the Splunk Toronto User Group.

Paul R Johnson has over 10 years of data intelligence experience in the areas of information security, operations, and compliance. He is a partner at Discovered Intelligence—a company that specializes in data intelligence services and solutions. He previously worked for a Fortune 10 company, leading IT risk intelligence initiatives and managing a global Splunk deployment. Paul cofounded the Splunk Toronto User Group and lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
Derek Mock
Derek Mock is a software developer and architect, specializing in unified communications and cloud technologies. Derek has over 15 years of experience in developing and operating large enterprise-grade deployments and SaaS applications. An excellent book on Splunk

I have had a keen interest in Splunk for over 2 years and have seen the product grown and evolve from 4.2 to the current release of 6.2. Coming from the IT/Legal Compliance background, I have found the product at times challenging (learning regular expressions... anyone?). When Splunk Operational Intelligence came out for pre-order, it quickly caught my eye and was quick to add it to my wish list.
This latest publication has been a real blessing. It includes the latest features within Splunk, like pivot tables and includes steps on how to build your own applications. So far I have found the book very helpful. I like how the information is arranged and how the how-to steps are presented in a very visual format. The author's use of examples are also very helpful and very easy to implement in any environment. To be fair I am only halfway through this book. But will post an update when I have completed it.
My recommendation is that if you are new to Splunk, then get this book. It will help you get up to speed on the product and can help you navigate the extensive material provided by Splunk. If you are an experienced Splunker, some of the book's contents maybe redundant, but even so a walk through on some of the new features cant hurt. I've found a few useful nuggets of information as I worked through the book. I hope this review helps. Go get the latest version from splunk.com, get this book and get splunking!
Disclaimer, I was fortunate enough to receive a electronic copy of this book by the publisher. My review was independent of this as I was about to order to the ebook this week. That said, I'll probably will buy the hard back copy because I have found it to be really helpful. I hope the author continues to provided revised editions as the product continues to evolve and perhaps develop a book more geared for Splunk deployments, the clustering of Indexers and SplunkWeb servers and walking the reader on setting up SSO Proxy servers using IIS and Apache.

The recipes are perfect for me.

I'm in the process of teaching myself the ins and outs of Spunk, and was getting totally lost in the features. This book is a godsend. I'm now over a big learning hump thanks to this. It is helping me way better than the manuals and forums were. The recipes are perfect for me. There are practical examples for all sorts of tasks. The language is clear and concise. I love it.

Great Book on a Specific Use Case

Comprehensive guide for a very productive use case.
The book focuses on the health and efficiency monitoring of applications. It's very comprehensive as it covers many scenarios and common problems that can plague front end - customer facing environments.
This book will assist in you extracting the gold within your data that you may not realize you have. You will be able to create dashboards for an entire application from end-to-end and give your clients an overall picture of what is happening through the many layers of an application. This book will cover transaction failure rate, database connection health, web logs, and how to work with all of these different types of data to paint the whole picture for the clients to view in a single place.
It is a great next step after reading "Exploring Splunk" (be sure to read that book first) to start building your Splunk environment to cater to your companies needs around operational intelligence. It will help give you the ability to determine when and where your applications are failing, which is a huge win and this book will help most with reaching their goals around this use case.
This book does not cover many things outside of monitoring your front end applications. This isn't a knock but do not expect this book to be "Exploring Splunk 2" or a more in depth training on what Splunk is capable of, outside of operational intelligence. You will most likely learn some things here that can carry over to other use cases but this book is focused on front end application health and awareness. To that point, this book covers its subject well and delivers on what it set out to do.
I hope there are more of these books in the future that focus on other use cases.
