Consciousness addressed by science

I was having a bit of a philosophical crisis when I went looking for a book on free will and determinism -- I had discovered that deep down, I really didn't believe in free will. That was a surprise, since consciously I thought the idea of fate was absurd. I always thought that my brain had been programmed to be the way it was through my genes and the way I was raised, and that the best I could do was to not get too upset about the way I am, do whatever came to me, and hope for some life-changing experience to make things better.
After some research on the internet I decided to do what William James and Abraham Maslow did and "act as if" I had free will, and see if I got the same extraordinary results they did (both had been depressed determinists and were "cured" once they gave free will an active try). I still wanted intellectual confirmation though, and I came across this book at the bookstore and bought it on a hunch.
This book has blown my mind. Schwartz' cognitive-therapy work with obsessive-compulsive patients leads us to ask the question, "How is it that a strictly mental process can result in measurable brain changes as shown on PET scans?" Is it caused by another part of the brain? Even if it is, that just postpones the question, because what caused that part of the brain to be any different this time? He makes the case that conscious experience isn't reduceable to anything more fundamental -- try having a colorblind researcher truly understand the color "red" by tracing physical and chemical changes in the brain. Combine that with the fact in quantum mechanics that observation affects which reality it is that shows up, and he proposes a kind of fundamental "mental force" and does a much better job of explaining it than I've done here.
One problem is that in the middle of the book there is a lot of scientific history of particular studies that would support his theory, but they aren't really necessary because they don't say much more than what he's already said, and there's lots of detail that isn't necessary for making his point. It can get dry and uninteresting in those parts, and it seems more like he's just trying to give these unsung scientists their due.
That can't negate, however, how great the rest of the book is. It has a very powerful argument against strict materialism, especially for this atheist/materialist who didn't believe in free will last week. (I can't *believe* how many things this book explains with regard to spiritual claims.) So, don't get discouraged by the scientific history if you get bored by it, and see the book through. And have fun.

Some good and bad conclusions

I bought this book anticipating a different perspective on this timeless question. A different perspective is exactly what I found. Schwartz begins with a description of his research on obsessive-compulsive disorder. This section of the book is simply great. It is a nice example of how advances in neurobiological investigation have helped to elucidate the neural circuitry that underlies psychological states. Schwartz also gives a nice overview of the current views on conciousness.
He then goes on to discuss the topic of neuroplasticity citing the case of the Silver Springs monkeys. You get a nice history lesson in addition to a summary of some hard won facts about the brain. He also gives plenty of examples of neuroplasticity in humans. He uses this as the physical basis of his own stylized treatment for OCD. His treatment is based on the concept of a mental force (a nebulous concept if there ever was one) that is able to change the brain through the principles of quantum mechanics. He devotes the rest of his book to discussing the quantum mind as well as some implications of the theory as it applies to consciousness.
It is the last third of the book that attempts to explain the concept of a mental force that interacts with the physical substance of the brain (through quantum mechanics) to ultimately produce behavior. The problem as I see it, is that Schwartz believes that consciousness is an emergent property of the brain, in that it is more than the sum of its mere physical parts. He seems to be unable to accept the idea that our mental lives are reducible entirely to physical processes. Many of Schwartz's conclusions in this book are based on his a priori assumption that the mind is more than the brain. He interprets the results of a variety of experiments as proof that the mind is not reducible. Granted, many of the experiments he alludes to are fascinating--neuroscience is fascinating by definition, of course--but that does not mean they HAVE to be the product of something greater than the brain. A good example of this is his discussion of Libet's experiments that revealed a readiness potential as proof of free will (and thus a rejection of the "philistine reductionist" viewpoint that all human behavior is caused because as we all know a lack of volition would just be the absolute-ruin-of-the-world-as-we-know-it GAG!). I also found Libet's experiments intruguing; however, I see them as simply raising more questions, not providing a death-blow to materialism.
Finally, Schwartz has a habit of quoting all over the place. He is especially fond of William James, and why not? James was ahead of his time. His contribution to our understanding of the mind is known by every student of psychology. However, Schwartz is using James's insights as an appeal to authority. He also quotes Roger Sperry among others as if to say, "well, these great thinkers think the mind is more than the brain so it must be so!"
Then there is the whole quantum mechanical (QM) brain theory. I'm not a physicist so I will refrain from commenting too much on it. To Schwartz and his physicist buddy Stapp, QM is the mechanism by which the immaterial affects the material. There is a lot of hype in the section of the book and some interesting proposals as well. However, it simply doesn't deliver in the end.
In the end, it is Schwartz's mixture of hard neurobiological facts with immaterial hocus-pocus conclusions that CAUSES me to give it an average evaluation. It's hard to believe that a scientist would be so quick to credit certain discoveries as irrefutable evidence of his own biased opinion. Contrariwise, these perplexing phenomenon are merely the beginnings of further lines of investigation. A scientist must assume he or she is working to uncover some material process. How would one go about trying to prove a physical process is the result of something immaterial?
If you have OCD, you will enjoy the first third of the book. If you are a student of the neurosciences you will enjoy the first two-thirds of the book. And if you're a dualist you will probably enjoy all three.

Overall, a very worthwhile read

There's a lot of interesting and useful information in this book, but it's not without it's flaws. On the positive side:

- The descriptions of experiments on the brain are fascinating. So are the descriptions of experiments in quanta mechanics and the resulting paradoxes.

- I find the conclusions regarding the brain's ability to rewire itself quite inspiring.

- I also find very interesting the idea that Buddhist meditation may be driving neuroplastic changes; it is implied that this physiological change--unbeknownst to the practitioner--is what is actually gained through meditation.

- I admire authors' drive to bring science to questions regarding sentience, although it isn't clear how successful they are; as others have said, taking the evidence provided to the conclusions provided requires a leap of faith. In any case, it's a start from which others may build.

On the flip side:

- I found myself reading reworded versions of the same idea over and over. It was as if the authors were themselves trying to rewire the reader's brain through repetitive exercises. Unfortunately, this makes the reader lose attention, thus undermining this goal.

- There is a lot of text that attempts to add a human interest perspective. Maybe this was considered important to the commercial appeal the book. But, for this reader, it only diluted the value.

- As mentioned by many others, the authors do not provide convincing evidence to support their conclusions on free will. For example, the authors provide very interesting details about quanta mechanics and the evidence that the universe is not deterministic. While I agree that a deterministic universe eliminates the possibility of free will, the inverse is not true: proof of a non-deterministic universe does not result in proof of the existence of free will.

On the whole debate over free will, I have concluded there are two levels at which people discuss this question: (1) a real-world, practical view and (2) a theoretical view. In the real-world view, as long as one consciously believes he has the ability to make choices, he has free will. There may be a perspective that exists, maybe from the view of deities or the afterlife, in which it is clear that free will is just an illusion; this possibility is the theoretical view. But this theoretical view just doesn't matter in the real world. The answer to the theoretical view of free will, whatever it is, has no moral implications to this world (the book is very concerned that the answer has deep moral implications). The fact is, sentient creatures believe that they make decisions under their own volition and believe that these decisions have consequences to themselves and others.

The authors start out with the theoretical question and proceed to prove only the real-world view. But I don't know if the real-world view of free will needs proving. Doesn't everyone believe they experience volition?

The "hunting wind," Ojibwa for the north wind, drives two beat-up old baseball players on a hunt for the blown-away past in Hamilton's third private-eye story set in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Hamilton's hero, Alex McKnight, ex-minor league catcher, ex-Detroit cop, current proprietor of his father's bare-bones hunting camp, seems to have neither the aptitude nor the ambition to be a private eye. This flaw, intentional or not, does yield some great comic moments, as McKnight bumbles around vital records offices, city clerk's offices, and libraries, trying to figure out just how an investigator would act. The worth of the series comes from the hardscrabble Upper Peninsula atmosphere and its gritty, eccentric characters (rendered in dialogue worthy of the Coen brothers) and from McKnight's middle-aged reflections on a life just disappointing enough to be interesting. The current mystery grows out of McKnight's old teammate, a goofy southpaw pitcher, and his desire to find his lost love of more than 30 years ago. The old teammates' inept search takes a nosedive into terror as they uncover some secrets best kept festering in the past. The surprise ending delivers a satisfying jolt. Another great mystery

This is my third book by Mr Hamilton (and his third book also). He is a very talented writer and the reader just slips into the story like a pair of comfortable shoes. His protagonist is likeable and believable. He is not the super-karate Special Ops private eye of other authors. He tends to get beat up. He kicks himself for not doing something right. And he has a small collection of friends on the Upper Peninsula that one comes to enjoy meeting. Almost like a collection of real people you probably know in your life. So far the trend in his books has been to find somebody that has disappeared. In this book, it is an old flame of a previous colleague that is being sought. Lots of twists and turns in the story.

I would say that reading his books in order is the best process. Watching his characters grow is very interesting. Mr Hamilton alludes to previous books in each subsequent novel. Reading in order helps to understand what went before. In the last three books there have been loose threads left hanging that I imagine will come back to roost in later novels.

I have gone to Google Earth and charted the locales in his books. It is an area I have never traveled and now must see.

If Hamilton had written excellent prose, this book would rate 5 stars. But his writing is average. Even so, if his ending had not been contrived, this book would rate 4 stars. But with this ending, it rates 3 stars. Do yourself a favor, skip the first third of the book. NOTHING HAPPENS and the writing isn't worth the time. Start at chapter 9. Anything you missed will be repeated. Too bad. Could have been a contender.

it's working for me...

i'm absolutely remembering more, and feel sharper. the log in the back shows me that i'm remembering between 4 and 5 words more on the word test, and i'm getting faster at all the exercises. i'm almost a whiz at dinner calculating the tip. new ground for me!

i have another two weeks left in the book - and i'll probably buy another. overall - highly recommended.

I'm not quiet 1/2 way through the book yet; however, the exercises are very simple...almost childlike, but I've noticed that I am processing information faster and my retention appears to have improved. Sort of lends credence to that the simplest solutions are sometimes the best when attacking complicated problems.

A Personal Scrapbook with the Limited Usefulness

The book is resembling a personal scrapbook with the very limited usefulness both for the first-time visitor and for someone who has the basic knowledge of the city. Chaotic 16 (!) "walking tours" have no maps. Listing of the hotels and restaurants is also chaotic, description close to none. Little advice and even less opinion can be found in this small publication.. Index is incomplete.

Mexico City Must-Have

Spoiler alert: This is the best $13.90 you can hope to spend on a guidebook.

My advice: Don't leave for Mexico City without it!

I came across this title while preparing for my recent trip to Mexico City. I wanted to update the guide books I already owned. This one stood out with both its unconventional approach and the excellent reviews it has earned.

The book's philosophy is simple: The author leaves conventional, straightforward matters (like what is contained in which museum) to mainstream guidebooks (or the internet). Instead, he (a long-time resident of the city) shares his notes, insights and opinions with you. The book is densely packed with the kind of practical information which makes or breaks a trip: Safety, hotels, taxis, food (especially street food) and nightlife. The centerpiece is a collection of carefully crafted walking tours. I followed the itineraries using google maps rather than the maps in the books which worked out OK for me. I had time for four only and I can attest that without this guide I would have missed out on sights and experiences (and foods) which really turned my visit into an unforgettable one. For example: I would not have eaten in the Mercado de Antojitos in Coyoacan and tasted the best deep-fried quesadillas I've ever eaten (Tour # 15) . I would also never found the Plaza de Los Arcangeles, the serenity of which needs to be experienced to be believed (Tour #16).

And so it goes...at the end there is even a list of classic Mexican films and novels to prepare you for the experience (or for you to remember the place fondly afterwards).

All in all, it was like being accompanied by an experienced, sophisticated friend who wants to show you the city he loves. That's great value for $13.90, don't you think?

It gave me a perfect overview of Historico Centro

Was only in Mexico City for 3½ days and this was the only guidebook I brought with me. It gave me a perfect overview of Historico Centro, which is where my hotel was. His series of walking tours don't miss a trick. With Mr. Johnston's encouragement, I even visited Mercado Merced--just about the ultimate mercado experience. I especially love all the information about street food, not only what it is, but where to find the best of it. I'm not sure I agreed totally with all the restaurant reviews, but close enough. Highly recommended. Even if you already have a more traditional guidebook.

Patrick Matsikenyiri is the composer, author, translator, and/or arranger of each piece in the collection. Dr. Matsikenyiri is a retired professor of music and culture at Africa University in Mutare, Zimbabwe, and a well-known composer and compiler of African song. He has led workshops on this subject around the world.

Patrick’s choir from Africa University recorded each of the 16 songs on a CD that is included with each copy of the hymn collection.

Dan Damon, the collection’s editor, helped with many of the English translations. He himself is an internationally known writer of hymns, a jazz pianist, and a United Methodist pastor currently serving on the faculty of Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California.

Worth it just for the introduction

"Being John Malkovich" is one of the most insanely creative films ever made,and a large portion of the credit for that goes to Charli Kaufman's moody,intimate,and sly script,presented here in pretty much the same form as it is in the finished film.Which is great,but on top of that you get,a stellar,caustic introduction in which the author is told to say a few words to the readers,beacause the readers are"owed...something"."I said I would try" replys our intrepid narrator,and what follows is a darkly hilarious trip through his mind as he tries to come up with something insightful or inspirational to say,all the while revealing his self-loathing and profound contempt.In the end, the best he can manage to come up with is "And if you're going to write a screenplay,try to keep it around one hundred and ten pages".Which when you think about it,is probably the most practical advice he could give.

Kaufmanian self-loathing triumphant

The real bonus here is Kaufman's intro--which, rather than explicating the writing or making of this movie, is an anguished, hysterical, can't-take-it-any-more Dance of Despair and Disillusionment that will brighten the day of any struggling scribe. "Wow!" one thinks, avidly turning the pages, "Charlie Kaufman waited five years, got the huge payoff, had a critical and commercial hit...and he's still absolutely bananas! God bless America!"
Los Angeles writers will especially enjoy the part about making friends with the take-out bags left on the floor of one's ever-more-apartment-like car.
Kaufman's growth proceeds apace: his new script ADAPTATION is like a feature-length expansion of his intro here. You've just got to love a guy who's an addled mess and doesn't try to whittle it into a cutesy Woody Allen persona. He's just cuckoo!

For the first time, I'm disappointed in a Newmarket Press Shooting Script

This book arrived today. I cracked open the box, brewed a fresh pot of coffee and eased back to give this screenplay a read. And I can honestly say, for the first time, I'm disappointed in a "Newmarket Press Shooting Script Series" book.

The reason I buy Newmarket Press books is because the screenplays are always in proper screenplay type and format. This book is not. It's an exact reprint of the "Faber and Faber" movie tie-in screenplay published in eleven years ago. A glance at the copyright page confirms this. The screenplay is published in Times New Roman, not Courier as in most other Newmarket Press screenplays.

That's not why I buy Newmarket Press "The Shooting Script" series of books. If I wanted the movie tie-in book published in non-screenplay format, which is still available here, I'd buy it.

Very disappointed.
