Theology "Already" and "Not Yet"

Ladd's New Testament Theology is a helpful introduction to the Biblical Theology of the New Testament. Ladd's primary contribution to the field of Biblical Theology is the incorporation of the "already" "not yet" eschatological dimension into New Testament theology. In his work he argues that there is a tension between realized and future eschatology throughout the entire New Testament. The future Kingdom of God has broken into the present and has radically shifted the entire redemptive history of the New Testament. While this Kingdom of God has become a present reality the entirety of its reign remains a future hope. This tension exists throughout the entire New Testament.
Ladd treats the Synoptic Gospels together and focuses primarily in arguing his case that the future coming age has broken in to the present age. R. T. France adds a helpful chapter where he looks at the unique contribution of each of the synoptics to theology. Much of the material on the Synoptics seemed a bit redundant and could have been shortened. However, when Ladd proceeds to discuss the Gospel of John he is at his best. The chapter where he discusses the Johannine Dualism is extremely helpful. Also the chapter on John's view of eternal life is very instructive.
In my opinion the best chapter in the book is on the resurrection of Christ. If Christ be not raised from the dead then our faith is useless - Ladd showed the importance and necessity of the resurrection throughout this chapter. He argued persuasively for the undeniable historical fact of the resurrection. Also in his dealing with the relationship of the church and Israel I believe he is dead on. He argues correctly that the church is the new spiritual Israel.
I must confess that his section on Paul was slightly disappointing. I believe that Ridderbos' Paul: An Outline is the best on Pauline Theology and most other works pale in comparison. With that said, the section was still helpful. Much of the section on Paul seems dated as it was written before the "Sanders Revolution." However, his section on Paul and the Law proves refreshing compared to the material written today although I disagree with his interpretation of Romans 7.
The chapter on the work of Christ, which detailed the atonement, was helpful. Ladd treats various biblical aspects of the atonement such as its relation to the love of God, its sacrificial and substitutionary nature along with propitiation and redemption. In his chapter on justification he highlights that justification is eschatological. While I believe this is true I remain nervous at the possible outcome for holding such a view. One potential danger is to say that the ground of realized justification is the work of Christ while the ground of future justification is the resultant good works. I believe he is correct to write, "Justification, which primarily means acquittal at the final judgment, has already taken place in the present. The eschatological judgment is no longer alone future; it has become a verdict in history" (483). Although I hesitate to use the word "primarily" for justification also seems to be rooted in eternity while worked out in present time and consummated in the future. Ladd uses the language of imputation and argues that the ground of our justification is the work of Christ and his righteousness imputed to our account (489, 491).
The rest of Ladd's work is most disappointing. He spends a mere 70 pages in dealing with the rest of the New Testament. His treatment of Hebrews - a theologically rich book - barely skims the surface while his treatment of the rest of the Catholic Epistles is hardly worth reading. Also it is surprising for someone who has done so much work on eschatology to only spend 15 pages on the book of Revelation. David Wenham's essay on the "Unity and Diversity of the New Testament" is a helpful introduction to a difficult subject.
Overall I believe that Ladd's work is a helpful contribution to the field of New Testament Theology although I believe it is sadly lacking in some places. Some of the additional essays (Hagner, France, and Wenham) have sought to fill the void, but there remains a large gap in the Catholic Epistles. Nonetheless, it is a volume worth working through and should remain a valuable repository for years to come.

Tired of liberal theology, read this book

If you want a great book on evangelical theology, this book is for you. Ladd states his reason for writing this book: If evangelical Protestants do not overcome their preoccupation with negative criticism of contemporary theological deviations at the expense of the construction of preferable alternatives to these, they will not be much of a doctrinal force in the decade ahead.
Ladd analyzes the presuppositions of liberal scholarship and shows how they fail to hold up to the test of accuracy, reason and logic. In his discussion of the historical Jesus and the Gospel of John, he brings to light one of the most basic presuppositions of the critical New Testament scholars by pointing out that they assume that the mind of Jesus is so limited that any apparent contrast between John and the Synoptic gospels must be due to differences in the early Church. Ladd further states that: Every great thinker. . . will select what seems most congenial or useful out of what he has seen and heard. Thus, Ladd diminishes the critical problem of the fourth gospel. He also points out that liberal historians run into trouble because they have no category for the divine. Thus, they approach the Scripture with anti-supernatural presuppositions that prejudice their study. The liberal scholar rejects anything supernatural for which there are no adequate historical explanations.
Did Ladd accomplish his objective? I think so. The book has its weak points, but these may be due to limitations set by the publisher rather than Ladd's theology. His discussion on the historical Jesus and the book of Revelation are primes examples of this- they seemed rather shallow and flat. One feels that Ladd could have done a better job. He does acknowledge in the preface that his study on Revelation that it is lacking an abundance of material. Other than these setbacks, Ladd does an excellent job presenting the Gospel as a truthful and accurate representation of the life and ministry of Christ.

WHOAH... only 31 days in and we're up an average of 6 solid pounds each

I was going to wait till the end of week 12 to review this but I don't see the need. As far as I'm concerned The Protocol is revolutionary. Me and 10 of my gym mates have been doing it for 31 days as of the date of this review and we are up an average of 6 solid pounds each. Two of the people doing The Protocol with me are 20-year gym veterans who normally have to go a year to put on a quality pound and even they are up 2 and 4 pounds respectively. These are already big men. Big as in solid 200+ pounders with bodyfat percentages below 14% so there's clearly nothing placebo going on.

Here are some tips that are likely to help -

1) If you are a nutrition newbie and having trouble figuring out what you should be eating to fulfill the nutritional requirements of The Protocol just get any of Mark Sisson's cookbooks or the "Make it Paleo" cookbook and you're golden. Just stick to the protein, carbs and fat amounts for your weight as detailed in The Protocol.

2) Cook food in bulk then single serving it in containers. You'll be glad you did if your life is at all hectic.

3) All of us doing The Protocol agree that if you have a susceptibility to gain fat easily you should go the all vegetables route with the carbs.

4) A couple of us can't sleep with food in our stomachs and have had to forgo the last supplemental meal of the day. Results are still super.

5) Your anabolic hormones and metabolism are turned up to 11 during The Protocol so even with eliminating the last supplemental meal some of us still have trouble sleeping. So what those of us with this problem are doing is not only skipping that last supplemental meal but adding ZMA in its place to sleep well. Results are still great and in any event none of us feel anything but rested and ready to roll.

6) One of the supplements in The Protocol is Beta Alanine which will make your upper torso and head itch like crazy for about an hour or so after ingestion. The Author doesn't mention this so I thought I would.

7) Two of the supplements in The Protocol, Arginine and Green Vibrance, taste horrendous and you just have to bear up and drink them. Arginine tastes like cat pee smells and Green Vibrance tastes like old, dehydrated spinach. Just plug your nose.

8) The food and supplement combinations of The Protocol make you feel very aggressive due to raised testosterone levels, so if you have mental health issues you should probably steer clear.

9) Another consensus among my gym mates and I is that none of us can remember being this aroused so much of the time. So if you have a significant other you might want to warn them in advance. If you don't have a significant other you might want to seriously consider getting one. ;)

You don't get anymore skeptical then me about supplement books and supplements in general because I think most of them are scams, but after reading The Protocol I knew instinctually that the author has obviously guinea pigged himself forever and condensed an enormous amount of sound nutritional reasoning into this final product. Sure `nuff, it absolutely works. Weeks 5 - 12 here we come!

Worked for me, and I'm still gaining mass. A top guide

This great book really is a great guide for anyone looking to gain muscle mass as quickly and effectively as possible.
The Protocol gives you a run through of all the supplements, what works best, how they work best and why they work. It doesn't make it overly technical, just gives out the basic kind of information you need to do what you need to do, which in my case was to get my mass up in the fastest and most effective way.
I honestly think that anyone who reads this book and then follows the rules and techniques laid out on the page will gain some level of extra muscle. If you really want it, and have the dedication, then this book is a superb way of helping you get that little bit extra.

Great resource

This book outlines a supplementation regime and explains why each particular supplement was chosen. The author also suggests some products that have been tested and certified. The author does not seem to try to 'sell' you on a particular brand -- he just simply offers suggestions and explains what *ingredients* you need to look for if you choose to look for other brands. This book does a good job of eliminating the guesswork and provides a concise regime to follow for the best results. I'm returning to weightlifting after a 10-year hiatus and I've started a 'pre-Protocol' regime based on the author's suggestions. I must say that this has been a great starting point for me and I've seen some impressive gains and realized those gains much faster than I saw 10 years ago!

Joel Comiskey (Ph.D. Fuller Seminary) is an internationally recognized cell church consultant. Excellent Book - Must read for all cell church leaders

This book not only explains the importance of the cell coach, but then goes on to explain the practical things a cell coach should do. If we did not read this book, we would not be putting an emphasis on coaching, and our cells would be dying off. Instead, our cell leaders are being challenged.

Penelope Allison is Reader in Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Leicester. She has been teaching ancient history and archaeology for nearly thirty years and has also held a number of research posts, including an Australian Research Council Queen Elizabeth II Fellowship at the Australian National University, Australian Bicentennial Fellowship in the Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge, and Visiting Fellowship at St John's College, University of Durham. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities, she has written and edited several groundbreaking books on Roman archaeology and household archaeology, including The Archaeology of Household Activities (1999), Pompeian Households: An Analysis of the Material Culture, and The Insula of the Menander in Pompeii III: The Finds, A Contextual Study (2006).

Excellent guide to Solr/Lucene - No matter what you already know, you will learn something from this book

This is a truly outstanding book. In the 25+ years that I have been engaged in the software profession, I can unequivocally state that this is one of the best software books I have ever read. It is a rare technical book that provides useful (i.e. "actionable") information whether you are a novice to search in general or Solr/Lucene in particular or a battle hardened veteran of the search software biz.

The prose is clear, jargon free and non-recursive, meaning that you don't already have to know what they are talking about to know what they are talking about (if you have ever been there, you know what I mean). The organization is well thought out, moving from basic search and Solr/Lucene concepts like precision and recall, text analysis, query parsing, inverted token mapping, faceting and scoring (Lucene style!) to cutting-edge aspects of search like distributed search (scaling), handling multiple languages and performance tuning considerations. The later chapters go into every important aspect of Solr with the same clarity and thoroughness as the introductory chapters.

When you finish this book, you will have the foundation necessary to tackle real world information discovery problems using Solr. Combined with the classic Lucene In Action by McCandless, Hatcher and Gospodnetic, your next step will be to dive into the fascinating world of Open Source Search with source code, JIRA tickets, patches and discussion threads. Every technical book is a snapshot of a technology at some point in its evolution. The timing of this book is fortunate as Solr has recently seen some significant advances in distribution and scalability, which are thoroughly covered. I believe this book will be soon be regarded as the authoritative reference for Apache Solr. There is a lot of information in this guide but it is organized excellently and very easy to follow. I read between 10-20 tech books a year and this is the best I have seen in a quite a while. The topics covered will be relevant whether you are new to Solr or are an experienced Solr Admin looking for information on SolrCloud and advanced tuning concepts.

Don't be afraid of the size of the book, it really deserves your time!

I was very happy when this book was announced and was looking forward to reading the full version of it. Finally i got it a few weeks ago!
After reading the introduction i realized this will be one of those books you will want to have on your shelf.
It promises a deep walk through on Solr capabilities and its almost 600 pages don't disappoint you!
Understanding Solr is not an easy task, however the authors manage to explain every topic with good language and clear examples.
I strongly recommend "text analysis", "facet search" and "taking Solr to the next level" chapters, which are full of insights and "ahh" moments. (At least for those who don't have a deep understanding of Solr).
Don't be afraid of the size of the book, it really deserves your time! Thanks guy for good work

Jorge Martinez-Vazquez, Regents Professor, Economics/Director, International Center for Public Policy, Andrew Young School, Georgia State University, USA

J. Martinez-Vazquez is Regents Professor of Economics and Director of the International Center for Public Policy, Andrew Young School, Georgia State University, USA. He has published over 20 books and numerous articles in academic journals, such as Econometrica, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, and the Review of Economics and Statistics. He serves on several editorial boards and has directed multiple fiscal reform projects, having worked in over 70 countries. He has consulted with the World Bank, the IMF, the ADB, the UNDP, the IADB, and numerous country governments. He was inducted into the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences in 1997, and in 2006 he was made an Honorary Professor of China Public Finance and Public Policy Academy, Beijing. In 2011 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Vigo in Spain, and in 2012 he delivered the Raja Chelliah lecture at NIPFP in New Delhi.

Musharraf Rasool Cyan is Assistant Research Professor at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, Georgia State University, USA. He holds a Masteras degree in Development Management from the University College, London, and a PhD in Economics from Georgia State University, USA. Cyan holds a fifteen-year professional record in the areas of tax reform, fiscal decentralization, public sector expenditure, development planning and management. He has worked for the Asian Development Bank in Pakistan (2001a2005), undertaking design of intergovernmental fiscal transfer systems at the sub-national level. He possesses a rich experience of development policy and management, and has consulted for international development organizations including the World Bank, UNDP, SADC, GIZ, DFID, and ADB. In Pakistan, he has worked as a local administrator and as Chief Economist in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He has also worked on public sector reform and policy in Afghanistan, Egypt, Nepal, Nigeria, Macedonia, and Rwanda.

Will touch your heart, make you think, and inspire you to be your best

I love all of Jon's books but this one is particularly special for several reasons. First it is a true story about an amazing young man whose example continues to influence others more than ten years after his death. If you can read this without being emotionally touched you might want to check your pulse.

Second, while there are thousands of books with strategies to be a leader there are far fewer on how to lead by being a follower and by being a servant. What so inspired me about George's story was the way he became a leader without trying to be a leader.

And third, the book is filled with lots of great ideas for being a better teammate and a better friend - and a better person.

Touching Story of Someone Who Made a Difference in Such a Short Time

Having read all of Jon Gordon's other books, picking this one up was a no brainer. Very quickly I realized that this book was very different from the others. After reading this book you can add my life to the number of people that George has touched and made better. I strongly recommend this book for anyone that wants more from life. In reading this book it has cemented the realization that to get more from life I have to be and give more. Thank you George!

Now in this second edition of his work, the author has expanded his survey to include the American critic Clement Greenberg, developed his treatment of New Art History and Visual Culture, and added a special essay on the learned art historian Erwin Panofsky and his contribution to Iconography and Iconology. Minor then considers the concepts of influence, originality, and greatness.

Poor Methodology

Poor methodology for art historians. Minor, invites the historian to be a personal critique, rather than relay facts objectively as a historian. The author seems to forget his place; that history is not for the historian to claim. Rather, reverently follow the masterpieces in art, while recognizing the serious consequences of altering the hard work and intention of ancient masters.

Great book for beginning Art Histroy Graduate students.

This book was required reading for my graduate Research Methods and Writing course. We used it in conjunction with Donald Preziosi's the Art of Art History. The combination of the two books is a great resource for anyone entering their MA in Art History. Art History's History is a helpful overall review of the different time periods. It is a good resource for reader-friendly art historical writings.

reductive, but still very useful

Minor has undertaken the impossible. Any historiography that is limited to 200 pages will undoubtedly be overly reductive. However, this does not entirely discredit Minor's work. While one may take issue with him in a number of places (particularly his chapter on feminism) he provides a generally well-balanced, user-friendly introduction to theories of modern scholarship. Minor is very cognizant of his own fallibility. He recognizes that his sketches of modern methodologies are inadequate. But he provides the necessary background for anyone who wishes to understand the state of contemporary art history.
At the conclusion of this book the reader is left unsatisfied. Yet I think that this may have been Minor's intent (I realize I am being a terrible deconstructionist). His aim, rather, seems to be to ignite an interest in students of art history, that they might, of their own volition, continue their study of art historical methodologies. If this is indeed Minor's aim, he succeeds.
