2000 years of climate history

This is the best book on the history of climate, and is full of stories from the last 2000 years, as well as tree-ring data and much more.
You need to be very into the subject, however, as it is a thick book.
The material from the pre-historic period is weak (of course), and the discussion of future climate trends has been overtaken by recent events (the Greenhouse Effect).
Still, if you are seriously interested in the subject of long-term climate, this is THE book.

Boteach's newest book reads like a film that stretches two hours but could have been wrapped up in 30 minutes. All fear, he posits, is a "toxic emotion" rooted in the "fear that you don't matter." In Part I, "The Case Against Fear," he draws on innumerable anecdotes from his work as a rabbi and counselor, but his generalizations are backed by little proof. ("No woman ever fears breast cancer," he writes. "Rather she fears her inability to deal with it.") To help readers eradicate fear from their lives, he presents 32 practical strategies in Part II that include dedicating your life to something higher, becoming a leader, "killing" your television, reconnecting with family, doing good, raising fearless children and building community. Each chapter begins with a biblical citation, but it is only in Part II that Boteach draws out that religious content. Boteach's approach veers from personal friend to questioning therapist to exhortative observer of American life, with an occasional shot of humor. The book's value lies in his insistence that fear is something entirely within readers' control, a choice that he correctly calls "immensely liberating."

We are all timid about something

Rabbi Boteach was on the View a year ago and I found him fascinating. He talked about Kosher Sex and I felt like his perspective was unique and personal, so, after reading that book I read this one asking myself how has fear limited my life?

We are sold fear all of the time, fear of wars, instability, disease, and sadly, fear of our Creator, G-d, which strangled our life. Between this brilliant Rabbi and Matthew Fox I am redrawing my image of my spiritual source and this specific book is so deeply rewarding to uncover our lack of confidence and daring, which limits our expansive nature, limits our search and allows us to settle rather than trust fate and fearlessly go for what we want, despite the hardships. Great read. Applies universally to us all, because we are all scared.

It's a lifesaver. Mr. Shmuley Boteach has been given the gift of wisdom for him to impart these truthful observations about fear, for all of us. Fear is a basic emotional ingredient in our lives, and a useless one at that. He teaches us how to combat it. And combat it for good.

God led me to buy this book, just when I Needed it Most. It's honest and very readable. Mr. Shmuley, thank you!

An excellent book on fear

I bought this book after seeing Rabbi Shmuley on his television show, which I believe airs on The Learning Channel (TLC). He artfully helps mend families who are near the breaking point. His wisdom and talent are beyond the beyonds if you ask me.

The ideas in the book are enlightening/thought provoking. He mentions the idea that our greatest fear is the fear of being insignificant, which is something I had never thought about and feel is likely true.

I enjoy the way the author uses wonderfully profound and inspirational quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Major concepts within each chapter are highlighted in bold.

My only objection to this book is the frequent mention of political ideas/concepts. I found myself laughing a few times that the Rabbi was indeed without fear to include so many references to world politics/civics, etc. that it might be a distraction for some readers. Due to this little "flaw," my ideal rating for the book would be a "4.5"

However, do not let that detract you from buying this book. It seems to be written with a lot of wisdom, experience and love.

A great resource for the working musician

This is a great book, a comprehensive survey of many aspects of what I (not really being a jazz musician) would rather call "contemporary commercial music theory." This area of study is typically lacking in classical musicians' training, and any classical musician who would like to expand his or her musical horizons, in order to compete better in the "real world" of music and be able to work fluently from lead sheets, would do very well to buy this book and study it from cover to cover.

I have to agree with fellow reviewer Stephen Apple that this is one of the most useful - and well-loved - books in my library. "Jazz Theory and Practice" was written as a college-level text, and assumes familiarity with music reading and some elementary music theory concepts. Nevertheless it begins with (for review purposes, assuming that some students may need brushups) the common material on intervals, scales, basic chord construction, etc. which are the nuts and bolts of "Music Theory 101". Then it goes on to cover the entire gamut of 20th century commercial music harmony, with great sections on melody construction, rules of chord substitution, the two great short forms of 20th c. song: 12 bar blues and 32 bar song form, modal jazz practices, etc. Pretty much all of the practical musical tricks and devices that a working musician should be aware of are covered.

For the reader, the important prerequisite is to be able to read the "grand staff", or piano notation with both treble and bass clef, as the examples are often in this form (most are in simple treble clef.)

This is not a book about improvisation per se, but it contains the necessary practical tools that a musician needs to develop an intelligent (rather than "intuitive") improvisation practice.

I was gifted this as a bonus book in Arrogant Neighbor and I really enjoyed it. It was fun, sexy and who hasn't been in love with their best friends brother at some time. Good book. I have enjoyed Kiri Ward's writing immensely.

Great resource for a quick review of Italian verb conjugations

As a teacher of Italian for adults, who are quick and demanding learners, I know how important it is to have handy a quick review chart of Italian verb conjugations which can be very useful when you cannot remember the difference between the future endings and the conditional (they're so similar!) So it's nice to have this chart readily available to refresh my recollection of the tenses. Since we are not immersed in Italian, we need to do a lot of memorization of verb conjugations in order to master the differences in tenses. I need all the help I can get sometimes in order to remember all these tenses!

Could use more irregulars

Since Italian is almost as full of irregular verbs as English, conjugations of the more common ones would be helpful. But as a resource, this card works well. I've put it in my travel notebook along side the similar vocabulary card and both will be airplane study on my trips to Italy.

This is the leading modern text in criminology, comprehensive and authoritative, written by 35 distinguished British contributors. The editors are Mike Maguire, Professor of Criminology at Cardiff University, Rod Morgan, Chairman of the Youth Justice Board of England and Wales and Professor Emeritus at Bristol University, and Robert Reiner, Professor of Criminology at the London School of Economics.

It has five parts: the history and theory of criminology, the social construction of crime and crime control, the dimensions of crime, the forms of crime, and reactions to crime. It covers research and policy developments and their relationship to race, gender, youth culture and political economy.

The evidence is that the serious violent crime rate is much higher in Thatcherite political economies than in welfarist ones. As Reiner writes, 'there is a plethora of material confirming that crime of all kinds is linked to inequality, relative deprivation, and unemployment.' So, for example, the rise in crime in Britain in the 1980s was due to what happened in the 1980s: naturally Thatcher blamed it on what had happened 20 years before. And it was the 1980s, not the 1960s, that saw the dramatic rise in opiate use here.

The evidence shows that states with higher welfare spending have less crime and lower imprisonment rates. For every dollar spent, Michigan's Head Start welfare programme brought $17 of benefit by cutting crime, thereby cutting the numbers imprisoned and thus the costs of imprisonment.

Of course, recognising that crime has root causes does not stop us exploring all possible avenues of crime reduction, victim support and penal reform. Nor does it mean ignoring offenders' moral responsibility. Understanding does not cancel the need for judgment.

Thatcherite political economies also have more punitive penal policies. Yet welfarist Sweden has had a smaller rise in crime than Britain, while having a less punitive penal policy. Similarly, Finland has dramatically cut its prison numbers, without increasing crime.

Growing economic inequality and social polarisation increase crime and therefore insecurity and fear. We cannot afford to leave the economy, or society or security to the market. We need to take responsibility for all aspects of our society.
