Theater historian Woll's scholarly yet entertaining account of the rise, fall, and resurrection of the black musical fleshes out a neglected but vital aspect of American musical theater. Woll starts with minstrel shows and "coon songs" and follows the development of the musical through the great shows of the twenties to current-day blockbusters like Ain't Misbehavin' . Throughout, stage history has paralleled social history; a subtext of discrimination against black performers and authors underscores Woll's splendid re-creation of the world of Cole and Johnson, Williams and Walker, Florence Mills, and countless others. A discography would have been welcome, but this is a minor complaint about a well-researched and admirable work. Essential for all theater and black studies collections. Black Musical Theatre begins its historical survey with Clorindy, the Origin of the Cakewalk and A Trip to Coontown, in 1898, and concludes with the Broadway smash Dreanigirls, in 1981. The section on the ragtime pianist and composer Eubie Blake and his popular 1920s show, Shuffle Along, attests to early black influence in American musical theater. Prior to the 1920s, black musical theater was enriched by Walker and Williams, Cole and Johnson, Miller and Lyles, and Ernest Hogan. White producers and composers such as George Gershwin (Porgy and Bess) who were deeply involved in black musicals are given due coverage, and the problems inherent in relations with whites over such issues as stereotyping are fully examined. Other political issues such as the lack of social criticism in white-created musicals is treated with perception. The photographs are often chosen from the Billy Rose Theatre Collection, New York Public Library, and add a visual dimension to the exposition that will be of great value to students of musical history. Costume and scenery designers will also appreciate the stills from Hot Mikado, Carmen Jones, and The Wiz. Other illustrations include sheet music, performers (such as Louis Armstrong), and programs. The tap dance, gospel songs, jazz. and other elements of musical theater were perfected by black performers and composers, and were an intricate part of the Broadway tradition that has since extended its influence into television, popular music, and film. About the Author
For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student’s perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her publications are known.

Dr. Marieb has partnered with Benjamin Cummings for over 30 years. Her first work was Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual (Cat Version), which came out in 1981. In the years since, several other lab manual versions and study guides, as well as the softcover Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, have hit the campus bookstores. This textbook, now in its Ninth edition, made its appearance in 1989 and is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of students studying human anatomy and physiology.

Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time and who would be unable to continue their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Clapp Laboratory at that college. Dr. Marieb also contributes to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she generously provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, she underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the university.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

In January 2012, Florida Gulf Coast University named a new health professions facility “Dr. Elaine Nicpon Marieb Hall.” With the help of Dr. Marieb’s generous donation, this facility contains laboratories in the School of Nursing that simulate an operating room, intensive-care unit, a labor and delivery room, and general medical surgical suites. She has also established a scholarship endowment for non-traditional students in the health professions, and an endowment to enhance the activities of faculty, students, and staff within health professions to support education, research, and community outreach.

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology� CD-ROM series.

When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center and on the board of directors of several charitable institutions in Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

Lori A. Smith received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis. Before discovering her passion for teaching, she worked as a research scientist and project leader in the medical diagnostics industry. In 1999, she joined the faculty at American River College in the Biology Department.� Currently she teaches anatomy and physiology and microbiology to pre-nursing and mortuary science students at American River College. Starting in 2005, she began co-authoring Pearson’s PhysioEx: Laboratory Simulations in Physiology and has continued to co-author several versions of the software and lab manual. Dr. Smith has been awarded “Instructor of the Year” by the American River College Associated Students for her commitment to serving students, and she is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).

Bought brand new cheaper than school book store , it's a lab book buy it brand new not used its better to have and create your own notes so you can have your own understanding of the material, than to look at someone else's notes that could be wrong or just plain sloopy. Do not rent !!!!!!!

An interesting and unusual approach to various political philosophies as they apply to freedom within society.

My reading interests are wide and varied and when I came across this 314 page soft cover (The Art of Freedom: On the dialectics of Democratic existence by Juliane Rebentisch translated by Joseph Ganahl) book from the Vine program I just had to read it. First off, this is not an easy book to read and unless you are seriously studying political philosophy you may want to pass up this volume. This is not a beginner’s or introductory text. The author explores in depth many of the well-known philosophers and how their particular views relate to democratic free societies today.

This text is organized into three parts. The first part (An antique diagnosis of a crisis) focuses on “the provocative beauty of Democracy: Plato.” Essays includes the following: Freedom and indeterminacy, the slavery of the tyrant, the unstable Democrat, the unfree opportunist, many jobs and much trespassing, the occurrence of an inner nature or the freedom toward self and several other topics. The second part (The Ethical-Political right of irony) covers various topics on the morality of Irony: Hegel, the ethics of aesthetic existence: Kierkegaard, and the sovereignty in romanticism: Schmitt. The final part (Democracy and Aestheticization) explains the spectacle of Democracy: Rousseau, the anaestheticization of the political in Fascism: Benjamin and post-democracy and the anaesthetizing of the political: a look forward. The remainder of the book has numerous detailed notes and an index.

This is not a book for recreational reading but rather a college text book that must be studied in order to grasp the deeper philosophical aspects of political systems, ideas and principles. It also explores the ethical and morality factors in a free society. Finally, in order to better understand and appreciate this book one should at least be familiar with Plato’s Republic, Socrates, Aristotle's principles, Hegel’s Philosophy of right, and other political philosophers.

Superb!

Exceptional. It's not often that I get an opportunity to sit and enjoy such a thoroughly well presented book these days...it reminded me of my early college days when so many concepts were new (to me at least) and elicited untold hours of thoughtful contemplation. While most of us have probably spent ample time with the concept of freedom, the art of freedom is quite the twist and heralds what is to come in the following pages.

Many readers will find a great deal familiar - especially those with a passing familiarity with the works of Plato, Hegel and so forth. Yet it is the familiarity which will form the foundation for what is to come. Superbly organized, this flows in a natural manner which allows the reader to progress at your own pace. This is written in an academic style but is far from drying and boring - it invites the reader to mentally engage while presenting solid philosophical foundations for each premise presented.

A quick disclaimer...because I'm unable to read the original language, I cannot provide any type of informed discussion on the quality of the translation aside from a generic perspective. Having said that, this is exceptionally reader-friendly and 'feels" natural/native. An absolutely delightful addition to my personal library, this would make a superb text for class study as well. Should be required reading for every voter!

aestheticization in peril

This book defends the aestheticization of life in the post post modern West from those who critique it. In my way of thinking this is essentially an Epicurean way of life but with a post modern rational for it instead of the science of the ancient Greeks - though theories of the post modern may very well assume something like that as a concept of nature. What is astounding is how Juliane Rebentisch's discussion of how this aestheticization of life impacts and coincides with the type of democracy current in the West and especially in the US fits so perfectly with the current election process and most especially the Donald Trump campaign, though it is certain to continue to have relevance long after that campaign is over since the overall analysis of the main principal of democracy as freedom, even in the Platonic sense, seems so amazingly apropos. (But note the German original text was published in 2011 and of course written well before that.) For those of us that did not even realize aestheticization was a thing, and a thing long enough to be under the gun of criticism such that it needed defending this is an eye opening book.
