Dr. Alan C. Shapiro is the Ivadelle and Theodore Johnson Professor of Banking and Finance. Prior to joining USC in 1978, he was an Assistant Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (1971-1978). He has also been a Visiting Professor at Yale University, UCLA, the Stockholm School of Economics, University of British Columbia, and the U.S. Naval Academy. His specialties are corporate and international financial management.

Should have for MNC finance people

This is a nice book for the medium-advanced student in finance - and definitely a good refresher for the practitioners of the international corporate finance. As other reviewers mentioned, might be a bit too shallow, but the number and the substance of the study cases helps for sure. A "should have" for the finance managers in multinationals. Most people suck at choosing which lure to use.

Would you like the confidence to choose the best lure colors for any fishing scenario?

For the majority of lure fishers, choosing which colored lure to tie on their line is nothing more than a game of chance. Knowing how to pick the right colored lure requires an understanding of how fish see objects and how light and color behave in the fish’s world, and most folks just don't posses that.

I’m fortunate to have spent the majority of my working life in a career that allows me to improve my knowledge of how fish behave, and these days I put a lot of thought into lure color selection. I make my lure choices based on the intimate understanding of lakes, rivers and oceans that my profession as an aquatic scientist has provided as well as my past experience with a fishing rod.

With all that knowledge, I’d love to say that I’ve always made intelligent decisions about what lures to buy or use for a particular situation.

Unfortunately, I can’t say that.

Like so many others, my approach to lure color selection for many years was little more than a lottery. I caught fish by switching lures a hundred times until I found one that worked, and very often I wasted a lot of valuable fishing time before I started catching fish. The trouble with this approach is that the next time you go to wet a line the conditions have changed and you have to start over and waste time all over again.

I’m glad to say that many years ago I stopped playing the lottery and started to put serious thought into how I could make intelligent lure choices, and since then I haven’t looked back.

I’m not going to tell you that I have the secret formula for knowing which lure style or color of lure the fish are going to be smashing on any given day, because that would be ridiculous. Conditions constantly change and fish, like humans, can change their minds, defy logic and rewrite the rules any time they wish.

But what I can do is offer you an understanding of the many interrelated factors that affect the appearance of your lures to the fish. In my experience this knowledge is invaluable for increasing your chances of catching a fish.

In this eBook I take some very complex scientific concepts and simplify them, giving you a starting point for eliminating the least likely lures and going straight to the top few that are most likely to work on the day. After that, it’s up to you to go through the daily process of trial and error that all lure fishermen must go through.

Refreshingly new insight to lure fishing.

In these times it is unusual to be pleasantly surprised by a new and refreshingly different approach to any current field of endeavor. Being an avid lure fisherman of many years and having read a great deal on the subject, I believed that my knowledge in this field was greater than that of the average fisherman. After reading Dr Vinall’s eBook it made me acutely aware, that my understanding of lures not only should be challenged, but challenged in the manner that the author has so successfully achieved. Undoubtedly his scientific back ground has enabled him to research and then ably articulate his findings regarding lure fishing and the way color, noise, shape and water conditions affect our sport. Reading ‘Why Fish Don’t See Your Lures’, I gained a valuable and different insight into my hobby and believe any reader with the same interest would undoubtedly benefit greatly from the contents.

This small book goes into a lot of science about fish vision and was totally boring as all get out. Although it does explain something about how vision is affected by water conditions and so on, I would have liked it to be not so dense in reading. It did give some charts inside to help guide the angler choose lure colors and all of that. I guess the book would be good for anglers deeply into vision knowledge and eventually get to the point. I would have liked to see more charts and less heavy writing.

I will have to read this book again because there are a lot of factors that determines what the fish can see. I'm just a guy that likes to go trolling. I was hoping for some simple answers to lure colors etc.

More solid transcriptions than expected, less omissions than usual

Choirgirl offers pianists a few challenges while mostly avoiding the daunting key signatures and compound time found on efforts like Under the Pink. Compared to the books for Little Earthquakes and Under The Pink the omissions here are few and mostly forgivable, and a few songs that could have turned out unplayable are spared by judicious compositing.

There are two unqualified highlights in the book: a fantastic "Pandora's Aquarium" and a faithful "Spark." Both songs are eminently playable while offering a few instances where you might need to pencil in your fingering. A serviceable trio of "Liquid Diamonds," "Jackie's Strength," and "Black Dove" follows them closely in quality.

However, the latter two tunes plateau at a particular difficulty, omitting a few killer passages that are just slightly defter than the rest of the song. A careful listen will reveal what's missing (and, if you have a good ear, will help you to fix it).

The problem is much more more glaring on "Raspberry Swirl." Where Tori occasionally departs from big block chords the book always stays with them. Also, there are some instances where the book could have indicated some of the additional keyboards from the song. Finally, it omits the ad-libbed solo running through the outro.

Simple "Playboy Mommy" is - puzzlingly - the worst offender. The book displaces simple figures from where they ought to be, and repeatedly ignores sparse right hand work in favor of continuous vocal melody. It plays okay, but it's clearly not the same thing Tori is doing. The same goes for a middling version of "Northern Lad."

Choirgirl includes some songs where piano isn't the most prominent fixture of an arrangement - songs are driven by keyboards, or Tori just supports the rhythm section. The book approaches these songs in a number of ways, because providing a verbatim keyboard part isn't always the best solution ... much of "Hotel" is very accurate to what Tori performed on tour, but at points it sounds peculiar when you play it by yourself.

The best-adapted band arrangement is "She's Your Cocaine." It mostly sticks to what Tori plays, but it adds some bass to the left hand and gives the melody to the right where it would be tacit. The additions don't sound wrong, and they're easy to identify and eliminate if you choose. "Iieee" does it's best to composite an occasional piano with with keyboards and bass guitar. It's a solid arrangement, and with a little ad-lib it can match perfectly to the disc. By contrast, "Cruel" could very well be what Tori is playing on keys and we'd never know it - the mix of the song obscures almost everything. The book errs in favor of bass notes and melody for most of the arrangement. It's not very fun to play.

Only one truly serious omission is made: the amazing "doing oh so well these days" section of "Liquid Diamonds" is completely absent. Also, the second verse piano is lost to a repeat sign, and Tori is clearly doing something different (more simple?) than what is notated in the chorus. Balancing these errors are a nearly flawless intro and first verse. Overall the song is playable and sounds fine.

The only other omission is that the "how many fates" bridge in "Spark" is clearly simplified. Otherwise, the brief piano bridge of "Black Dove" is close to accurate, as are most of the outstanding compound-time solos in the middle of "Hotel." And, as already mentioned, the arrangement of "Pandora" is excellent.

The book features no background vocals, which leaves Tori's unintelligible and sometimes operatic efforts to the imagination. The loss isn't too objectionable since nothing could really be counted as a dual-lead on this disc (as opposed to the bridges of "Space Dog" and "Father Lucifer").

Choirgirl might be the best Amos book for guitarists - the chord frames offer logical choices, nothing requires a capo (though try first on "Swirl" and fourth on "Black Dove"), and the songs all lend themselves to adaptation. A guitarist who reads a bit of music will be able to incorporate many key riffs or arpeggios that are perfect for guitar or bass (see "iieee," "Playboy Mommy," and "Jackie's Strength"). Inventive players will even be able to adapt songs for solo performance using alternate tunings (try a drop-D variation such as DADGAD for "Hotel").

Choirgirl is perhaps the Tori album that could most benefit from a full score, as it uses her band to the utmost. However, even as just a piano folio it's a strong set of songs that sometimes benefit from careful adaptation. If you're planning to just buy one Tori book based on the strength of the piano transcriptions you may want to opt for Pink, Pele, or Scarlet's before coming back to this one. If you're collecting Tori's entire series of sheet music you should buy it ASAP, as has been out of print for quite some time.

Something's just missing

I bought the book expecting to "play like Tori." that was my first mistake. She just goes TOO many places, and that's very noticeable in this book. As has been said before the Piano took a back seat to the other instruments, and so playing without the other instruments just doesn't give the feel; however, it is fun to turn on the CD and play along, especially with Raspberry Swirl. But other than that, there isn't the fluidity that other Tori books have. The chords are so blocky and sustained (ie Jackie's Strength: held bass notes throughout the entire song) that I just couldn't capture what I was looking for. Not my first choice for a Tori sheet music book, but still not a bad buy if you like to play along.

As good as it gets?

As Tori Amos sheet music goes, is this as good as it gets? Obviously it's difficult to get exact transcriptions of Tori's material (she's too damn good at the piano!) but this book makes a decent stab at it. Basically it's as good as the Boys for Pele book, which was the closest I'd seen. The difference with this book really lies with the way Tori recorded this album. from the choirgirl hotel was extremely band oriented, therefore the piano transcriptions suffer most with Cruel, She's Your Cocaine and Hotel. The definite highlights are the introductions to Black Dove and Pandora's Aquarium. Spark is transcribed well and Jackie's Strength is excellent. Northern Lad seems to have been simplified, but with a little improvisation and listening to the record it's fine. Raspberry Swirl follows a basic chord pattern repeated, and the piano break of hotel captures the flowing signature of the record. Playboy Mommy is essentially pretty simple anyway and is definetly the most accessible transcription. Go there first!
In conclusion the book is a must for fans, and is excellent at opening up the album for people.

This book is devoted to determining the prices of financial derivatives using a partial differential equation approach. In the first part the authors describe the formulation of the problems (including related free-boundary problems) and derive the closed form solutions if they have been found. The second part discusses how to obtain their numerical solutions efficiently for both European-style and American-style derivatives and for both stock options and interest rate derivatives. The numerical methods discussed are finite-difference methods. The book also discusses how to determine the coefficients in the partial differential equations.

The aim of the book is to provide readers who have some code writing experience for engineering computations with the skills to develop efficient derivative-pricing codes. The book includes exercises throughout and will appeal to students and researchers in quantitative finance as well as practitioners in the financial industry and code developers.

Well Done

This is a GREAT book... if you are looking for treatment of "options pricing" from 2 specific perspectives.

In the first half of the book, the authors tackle the pricing issue using PDEs only, paying little attention to the Martingale approach. The treatment is VERY detailed, starting with the Ito Lemma (one dimension and n-state variables), and gradually moving from Vanilla to Exotic options. There is also a shorter chapter on Interest Rate Derivatives.

The greatest thing about the book is that every result is either proved or strongly justified, and that each section nicely builds on previous results. The Barrier & Lookback options pricing formulas are thoroughly developped and the authors do not try to skate around more complicated aspects of the theory. The sections on American options (Linear Complementarity & Free Boundary Formulations, location of the free boundary) are gems! The book is obviously math intensive and sometimes a little dry, but efforts to go through all the sections are well rewarded.

In a second part, specific numerical techniques for solving the PDEs are thoroughly explained. First, numerical techniques are reviewed in a very tight chapter, swiftly and clearly presenting all one needs to know to efficiently tackle solving PDEs numerically. Then, specific option problems are discussed in details. No code is provided, but the mathematical procedures are very well laid out.

Overall, I found the monograph a lot more mathematically detailed than most other books on the market (Hull, Wilmott, etc...), while being relatively good at clearly highlighting why certain issues are problematic and constantly keeping the big picture in perspective.

Somewhat surprisingly for a first edition and given the sometimes complex equations, the editing is VERY tight (good English, few typos) and the incremental steps are well balanced in terms of providing enough information for reader to easily fill the gaps. The only suggestion for further editions would be to collate ALL the pricing formulas (some, when replicating calculations already presented, are left to be demonstrated as an exercise) in an Annex for quick reference. More coverage of Interest Rate models using the same detailed approach would also definitely add value.

In all, a very good book.

Very good book.
First chapter shows the basics of derivatives (someone would like Hull's for more detail).
Second is what I look for. Introduces derivatives pricing and stochastic processes by example.
From Black-Sholes to exotics and interest rate options, the reader will find PDE equation, boundary conditions and (a lot of) closed formulas.
Everything step-by-step. It is not a formula reference (like Haug's) but a book you will study in order to take practice to construct your own models.
Second half of book is about numeric solution. Well explained, a lot of case studies, but no pseudo-code or source code CD. Buy a Numerical Analysis book to support you with algorithm and coding if you need.

An excellent book on derivative pricing

So far, I have read/bought more than 30 books on Derivatives while studying for a Master's in Fin.Eng. and this book is by far one of the best in terms of introducing someone in a clear and concise manner to how to value and interpret many derivatives securities.

The other 2 reviews have clearly laid out the structure of the book, so I won't redo it here.

However, I wish to state how mathematically sound are the methods for exotic options (chap 3), for deriving the four one-factor interest models (chap 4) and most importantly, the critical reformulation of the American-style derivatives as a Linear Complementarity problem and the carefully and sound discussion of the free-boundary for such derivatives.

Also, the numerical section (chap 5 to 8 ) is very well laid out -again I possess more than a few books on the subject- and you end up with the ability to solve most of the PDE that you model, if you carefully write the appropriate code, and understand the meaning of the coefficients of the PDE, which takes time and experience.
