About the Author
KEVIN R. MIRABILE is a clinical assistant professor of finance and business economics at Fordham University's Gabelli School of Business, where he teaches courses on finance, alternative investing, and hedge funds. During his more than thirty years in financial services, he has held senior executive positions at Larch Lane Advisors, Morgan Stanley, Daiwa Securities, and Barclays Capital. He is a Certified Public Accountant, a member of the Hedge Fund Association's Education Committee, and a member of the Greenwich Roundtable's Founders Council. He also holds a bachelor's degree from S.U.N.Y. Albany, a master's degree in international banking and finance from Boston University, and a doctorate in finance and economics from Pace University.

A Very Thorough, Enjoyable Overview

This is the kind of book which all hedge fund investors, amateurs and professionals alike, will want on their shelf. It covers everything, and it covers it very clearly. What exactly is a hedge fund, who invests in them, what do hedge funds invest in, what is their performance, these are just some of the areas covered. Not only that, but he helps analyze and understand performance and puts it in context. He has looked over the whole industry and can help one understand if a small or large fund is better, new or old. It's not an exciting novel, but it is very very readable, a pleasure to skim through or use as a reference.

It will be useful to potential investors

There are not many books that give a cradle-to-grave perspective on hedge funds, this one does. It will be useful to potential investors, students or those working in other parts of finance who want to understand hedge funds. I liked the trade examples and the explanations of portfolio finance, which is a very important but also overlooked aspect of the industry. I have managed hedge fund since the late 1990's and often get asked to recommend books for those looking to understand the industry. This is one of the books I recommend.

As someone who has spent most of my career working in the hedge fund industry, I highly recommend this book. It provides a very straightforward and well-organized primer on various hedge fund strategies, how funds are organized, who invests in them and why, etc.
