The Real George Washington: The True Story of America s Most Indispensable Man. There is properly no history; only biography, wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. If that is true of the general run of mankind, it is particularly true of George Washington. The story of his life is the story of the founding of America. His was the dominant personality in three of the most critical events in that founding: the Revolutionary War, the Constitutional Convention, and the first national administration. Had he not served as America's leader in those three events, all would likely have failed -- and America, as we know it today, would not exist.
Why, after two centuries, does George Washington remain one of the most beloved figures in our history? The Real George Washington answers that question by giving us a close look at this man who became the father of our country and the first American President. But rather than focus on the interpretations of historians, much of his exciting story is told in his own words. The second part of this 928-page book brings together the most important and insightful passages from Washington's writings, conveniently arranged by subject.
Published by the National Center for Constitutional Studies, a nonprofit educational foundation dedicated to restoring Constitutional principles in the tradition of America's Founding Fathers. The National Center for Constitutional Studies...is doing a fine public service in educating Americans about the principles of the Constitution. -- Ronald Reagan, President of the United States

Personal and Informative, great read
By Donna Odneal
I had never read a book on George Washington except of course the history books from school. My bucket list is to read a biography of every President and First Lady. The reviews were very good on this particular book, with good reason. I couldn't put it down, not only a easy read but a informative read. Jay Parry gives you a personal portrayal of our first President, from birth to death. I learned more from this book than I ever did from school. After reading the sacrifices that our founding fathers made so that we may have the freedoms we so enjoy today, you will be filled with appreciation and patriotism

Great book but not just about Washington
By Sentinel
I finally got around to reading this very large and thick book. Excellent book. Gives a fantastic perspective and and history of the indispensable man. But now i know why the book is so thick. It has a lot of history on the war. Some of it has nothing to do with Washington in particular. Very descriptive accounts of major battles which is all very interesting and I loved it ... but it had little to do with Washington other than he was commander at the time. It also has a lot of Washington during the war and things he did do and was present at, but there is a lot about other battles at which he was not present.
So it could have been shorter if they had talked only about Washington and his accomplishments alone, but still I love history and I found even those parts that were not directly about him to be great and insightful. All in all a great history book and biography of the greatest president or, for that matter, leader. If you want to know all about Washington and a lot about the Revolutionary War, this is the book for you.

A hero, portrayed as one.
By john washington
This is book was a pleasant surprise. I recently finished reading His Excellency by Joseph J. Ellis and was let down, I don't recommend it. Ellis' work is sterile and cynical. It accentuates Washington's flaws, and makes a point of deconstructing one of our nations heroes. I wanted a book with all the information but without the agenda. I didn't want the author to stand out more than the subject. I found what I wanted in The real George Washington.
It's a large volume, over 900 pgs. (The last 300pgs or so are texts and excerpts written by Washington himself) but the book isn't unwieldy. It's thick, but not the dictionary-size I thought it would be, it's about 8 x5 inches, a perfect size for easy reading. The text is on the large side and there are paintings, maps and letters scattered throughout. It ended up being a very quick read.
