English Longbowman 1330-1515 (Warrior), by Clive Bartlett

The English military ascendancy which lasted from the mid-14th to the early 16th century was founded upon defensive tactics based on the use of the longbow. This weapon, distinctive in that it was used by English forces alone, was probably the most effective missile weapon of the Late Middle Ages: its arrow had the same penetrative ability as a modern day bullet and the bow's rate of fire was not equalled by any weapon used by English forces until the adoption of the Lee Enfield rifle at the beginning of the 20th century. The English longbowmen's involvement in wars such as the War of the Roses (1455-1485) and One Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) is discussed.

One of the Stronger Osprey Titles
By Wilhelm Ritter
Osprey books are a mixed bag, and can only ever be introductions to a topic, since they're intended for wargamers and not scholars. Still, the best osprey titles can be very good introductions indeed--this is the case with this title. The text is pretty good, though rather dry as Osprey books often are. The real shining star of this book, though, is the illustration--Gerry Embleton is a very serious historical artist and consultant who's worked for a great number of museums, making displays and whatnot. His illustrations are both very lively and rich in historical detail. The pictures of period artwork and surviving atifacts are also quite good.

At least as good as this volume is the English Knight 1400-1500, also in the Warrior series.

Yew knew this was coming ;)
By Ron Glass
This is a great intro to the most well know soldier of the Hundred Years War period: The English Longbowmen.
How the were organized, fed, trained and equipped are all covered in this great little book. Excellent illustrations for any re-enactor to envy.

A bit disappointing
By JPS
This is the feeling I was left with when finishing this now twenty year old Warrior title. It does have great qualities and, as other reviewers have mentioned, perhaps the major one are the plates from Gerry Embleton. My favourite one happens to be that of the archers at Agincourt, with one of them clearly shown wearing no trousers because the army had been suffering from dysentery for weeks. However, even with the plates, there are one which seems pretty useless. The last plate shows a brawl between English and German troops in 1513 but adds very little (if anything at all!) to the topic of longbow men. I could not help feeling that this was a waste and that it could have been replaced by another one closer to the subject.

My main problem, however, was with the accompanying text. Some pieces, such as the sections on recruitment or on beliefs and behaviours, were extremely interesting and valuable but I found that others describing each bit of kit were overly technical and detailed, at least for an overview of this sort. A related issue is that such technicalities have taken up so much space that the author had none left to present, even briefly, the performance of English longbow men in battle. Given the multiple examples during the period covered, and the fact that the booklet clearly shows how highly skilled they were and to what extent they were, for a time, in demand across Europe, this is certainly a pity.

One last set of surprises and (relative) disappointments is that the author seems to have largely and mostly relied upon the findings of the Mary Rose and may not have used all of the available resources, especially for the fourteenth century. I was surprised, for instance, to find no mention of Froissard who, if I remember correctly, had quite a few things to say about the performances of English archers on the battlefield. Also a bit disappointing was the very limited discussion about the performances of longbows in the hands of a well trained and experienced archer, despite the fact that they have been quite a few modern tests and that the author himself seems to be a practioner.

Three stars for what is nevertheless a worthwhile read and a book to buy if you are after good plates (minus one).
