Thorung La and Back on a Dime

If you don't have a few thousand dollars to fly to Nepal and hike the Annapurna Circuit, but you do have $4.00 and a phone, then congrats, Tristan Higbee has just saved you a huge bundle of cash. Like his other excellent trekking narrative Himalayan Pilgrim: A Chronicle of Independent Trekking Through Nepal's Less-Traveled Regions, Annapurna Pilgrim does an incredible job of transporting you from wherever you are and plopping you down in the heart of the Himalayas. I am genuinely not kidding when I say reading this book feels like going on your own little trek through the eyes of someone with an open mind, a glib sense of humor, and the time to explore the furthest reaches of the mountain region. Whether you're trudging over dusty jeep roads, wriggling your fingers for warmth in the blustery morning on Thorung La, or watching the rhododendrons burst like fireworks as you make your way through a tropical canyon, I can promise you that you will a) be surprised at how hard it is to put this book down and b) you will get a sense of adventure and fulfillment as you accompany the author on his journey. If that's not worth your time then what book is?

Wonderful Adventure in Nepal in Winter!

This book is a well-written book about trekking around Annapurna in Nepal in the winter. There are some great pictures along with the lively and informative text. This book should appeal to those adventurers who are thinking of trekking here (lots of details as to cost, equipment, etc.), as well as to us arm chair adventurers who just like to read about other people's adventures. This is the third book Tristan has written about trekking in Nepal and I highly recommend all of them. Tristan is a very good writer and makes the subject come alive. At the end of the book there is a link to many more pictures on his blog, which are well worth viewing.
