Very Good read but......
By PB
I must say this is my first exposure to Jeffrey Archer and I was quite surprised. The story centers around the Clifton family, and their survival after a tragedy hits their family. I will be vague so there are no spoilers in this review. I found Archer's style very easy to read, his descriptive terms allows the reader to feel like they are right there in the middle of the story.

The main plot is regarding Harry, the son of a mother who gives up everything to be sure that her son HAS everything but life puts up some gut wrenching road blocks. This book is full of twists, surprises, loves that didn't work, loves that should not have been, lies, deceits, etc.

This is the first in a line of books by Archer which take you on a trip into the Clifton family saga. I strongly suggest you read them in order:
1. Only Time Will Tell
2. Sins of the Father
3. Best Kept Secret
4. Be Careful what you wish for
5. Mightier than the sword
6. Cometh the Hour

FYI for you, the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was the ending of this book. Once you read it , you will completely understand. IMHO this is a great read, definelty worth your time.

Good start to the Clifton Chronicles
By Alan Mills
This is the first volume of a six (so far) part series chronicling the life of the Clifton family. This volume introduces the main characters: Harry, his girlfriend, Emma and her brother, and Harry's best friend, Giles, and various others that pop in and out throughout the series.

In this volume, we follow Harry from his early teens to his graduation from grammar school (which in the US would be high school), which is shortly followed by World War Two.

I made the mistake of starting with volume five, and then going back to the beginning, so it is easy to see how many of the conflicts Archer establishes in this volume set the stage for the narrative tension in the later books. I highly recommend reading them in order...not jumping around like me.

I loved volume five, but this volume reads like what it is: a book used to introduce characters, relationships, and conflicts which will be more fully developed in later volumes. So in that sense, this is my least favorite of the chronicles. On the other hand, without this one, the remaining volumes don't work as well.

Book one in the Clifton Chronicles
By M. R. Randazzo
This is the first book in the series of the Clifton Chronicles of which I found out about when I heard about the last book of series, so I decided to start from the beginning of the story. We are introduced to Harry Clifton and his mother Maise Clifton who is a widow of Arthur Clifton. A little backstory occurs prior before birth of Harry from Maise's viewpoint. She had accompanied Arthur and her brother to place for a celebration but she took a side step trip meeting up a man with whom she had sex. In those days (1920's) very little methods were used to prevent pregnancy but she figured with her impending marriage to Arthur, it wouldn't make any difference if she got pregnant and she could actually enjoy the marriage bed considering the worse part was taken care of. Because of the close timing between her having sex for the first time and marriage, there was always a doubt about who the real father was. but Harry seemed to resemble Arthur. At the beginning of Harry's story, he is presented as a very intelligent child but bored with school so he is constantly playing truant and spending time with The Old Man who lives in a converted railcar in shipyard.Harry was told his father died in the Great War WWI. Harry likes to sing in the choir and the choir mistress when she hears his voice decides to get him a scholarship to good school with boarding included but he has to also pass regular grades besides choir. He gets unexpected aid from the Old Man and his teacher when he puts mind to study.. Harry received the scholarship and gets to go to the school where he meets his soon to be best friend Giles Barrington.. When he is invited to Giles home for a birthday party, he meets Emma, the sister and Elizabeth, the mother and the father Hugo Barrington. Both the sister and mother treat Harry with warmth but the father acts with noticed coldness. Another backstory kept hidden by all parties involved. Hugo was in charged of Barrington Industries on the night of Arthur Cliftom's disappearance and Maise's brother Stanley was his dock mate in working at job. Apparently the boat being worked on, had needed something done on space underneath the inner hull and Arthur had not left that area when the inner hull was sealed so he was trapped inside. Stanley tried to get Hugo to reopen that part because he was sure Arthur was trapped but Hugo only took 5 minutes of checking and refused to open hull because it would cause major delays. By the next morning both Stanley and Hugo knew Arthur had been trapped inside. Hugo bribed Stanley with 5 pound notes to keep quiet and then had him arrested for thief of that same money to get him out of area. Nothing was done for Arthur's widow Maise, in fact she was banned from coming on the premise. But Hugo never realized that the Old Man had seen and heard everything. Hugo realized who Maise is when she comes to see him after Arthur has been missing for almost a week. ( the one night stand). He also realizes that Harry could be his son when he meets him at Giles birthday based on birthdate and shared color-blindness trait, hence the coldness. (It effects who inherits the title and estate). Hugo is determined to undermine everything for Harry and his family instead of owning up to his indiscretion. Harry's mother's struggle to make a living despite all obstacles is amazing considering the time period (1929-1939). During this book, Harry learns about his father's death and the circumstances of his birth and the questions of whether or not Hugo Barrington is his father and he resolves to find out the answer.

Great Book with LOTS of GREAT advice: Insight will bolster any Digital Marketing/Reputation Management Strategy
By Zhelinrentice L. Scott
The Mechanics of Online Reputation Management is a must have for not only individuals who want to look good on the internet, but it is a must have for Digital Marketing and Search Engine Optimization Professionals everywhere. One thing that I really appreciated in this book is that it came quickly in the mail. When I ordered it a week ago, it arrived right when Amazon said it would, Friday night. Since receiving the book I have skimmed it, and I was immediately drawn to the extensive list of video sites, social media sites, and other extremely practical resources. It is quite difficult to find good advice, and even harder to find good help these days as a small business owner or marketing professional. I think that this book raises the bar on the standard of content that marketing books should have. In addition this book is extremely detailed and thorough about all the types of ways that you can go about implementing your search strategy (images, text, video, web asset creation and other rich content). This information marketers charge thousands for, but it is in this book for less than $20. Buy the book, you will be happy you did. I know I am. :-)

This book will be placed in and remain in my reference bookshelf for all of my digital marketing efforts.

A must-read for those of us who do not understand how to use the internet to make or repair our online reputation!
By Diane Bucci
There are very few books I would consider a “must read,” but this one is full of pertinent information that every business owner; every individual who relies on the internet for their business as well as personal reputation should read. And in this age, that means everyone except Grandma. This book gives a layman’s explanation of the mysterious world of SEO’s, links, URL’s, and answers the question of why certain items are always pulled up on the first page of an internet search. Collins offers a step-by-step instructional guide to developing, maintaining or repairing the online reputation of a business or individual. He offers numerous sources to help get you started building a positive internet presence at no cost or low cost, as well as helpful instructions for doing damage control when negative information becomes linked to you or your business. I highly recommend this book for everyone who wishes to affect their business or personal reputation via the internet, or anyone who simply desires to learn more about the web itself. Though Collins’ knowledge is clearly extensive, his book does not read as an “over your head” tech manual. Very user friendly!

... management for a while now but have frequently been disappointed at the absence of quality guides on the market
By Eric P
I've been looking for a comprehensive set of solutions for reputation management for a while now but have frequently been disappointed at the absence of quality guides on the market. My search led me to a couple of guides that seemed promising at first, but a closer look revealed outdated methods or strategies that I had already tried and that didn’t really provide any beneficial results. I was about ready to give up and simply rely on the scant knowledge I could get from online sources until I chanced upon the Mechanics of Online Reputation Management: Repair & Control Your Name or Brand Reputation Online by Tyler Collins.

A quick glance at some online reviews showed that the book enjoyed quite a good reputation. However, nothing prepared me for the sheer wealth of information contained in its pages. In clearly outlined steps and easy-to-understand language, Tyler goes into depth about everything that anyone could ever want to know about managing a reputation online. This was exactly what I was looking for, and the methods outlined in the guide were equally suited to managing personal names, corporate names, brands, and most any other entity.

Most of the essential aspects of reputation management are covered in the guide, but what I found most helpful were the sections that dealt with controlling the content that shows up in a search engine in relation to a name, brand, or company. The guide detailed the different tools that could be used to improve search content associated with a brand such as images, text, video, web asset creation and other types of rich content. Also provided are tips on how to identify any reputation-related issues, and how to address them quickly and effectively.

One thing I really like about this guide is how the author explains even the most complex concepts clearly. Although there is a lot of information provided, I never felt like I was being overwhelmed with too much information, nor did I have any difficulty following along with the recommended procedures. If you are looking for a comprehensive set of methods by which you could establish a positive online identity, I highly recommended checking out this book.

Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives, by Gretchen Rubin

New York Times Bestseller
Washington Post Bestseller

The author of the blockbusterNew York Timesbestsellers,The Happiness ProjectandHappier at Home, tackles the critical question:How do we change?

Gretchen Rubin's answer: through habits. Habits are the invisible architecture of everyday life.It takes work to make a habit, but once that habit is set, we can harness the energy of habits to build happier, stronger, more productive lives.

So if habits are a key to change, then what we really need to know is: How do we change our habits?

Better than Before answers that question. It presents a practical, concrete framework to allow readers to understand their habits—and to change them for good. Infused with Rubin’s compelling voice, rigorous research, and easy humor, and packed with vivid stories of lives transformed, Better than Before explains the (sometimes counter-intuitive) core principles of habit formation.

Along the way, Rubin uses herself as guinea pig, tests her theories on family and friends, and answers readers’ most pressing questions—oddly, questions that other writers and researchers tend to ignore:

•Why do I find it tough to create a habit for something Iloveto do?
•Sometimes I can change a habit overnight, and sometimes I can’t change a habit, no matter how hard I try. Why?
•How quickly can I change a habit?
•What can I do to make sure I stick to a new habit?
•How can I help someone else change a habit?
•Why can I keep habits that benefit others, but can’t make habits that are just for me?

Whether readers want to get more sleep, stop checking their devices, maintain a healthy weight, or finish an important project, habits makechange possible. Reading just a few chapters of Better Than Before will make readers eager to start work on their own habits—even before they’ve finished the book.

A NOTE TO THE READER
Better Than Before tackles the question: How do we change? One answer—by using habits.
Habits are the invisible architecture of daily life. We repeat about 40 percent of our behavior almost daily, so our habits shape our existence, and our future. If we change our habits, we change our lives.

But that observation just raises another question: Okay, then, how do we change our habits? That’s what this book seeks to answer.
But while Better Than Before explores how to change your habits, it won’t tell you what particular habits to form. It won’t tell you to exercise first thing in the morning, or to eat dessert twice a week, or to clear out your office. (Well, actually, there is one area where I do say what habit I think is best. But only one.)

The fact is, no one-size-fits-all solution exists. It’s easy to dream that if we copy the habits of productive, creative people, we’ll win similar success. But we each must cultivate the habits that work for us. Some people do better when they start small; others when they start big. Some people need to be held accountable; some defy account- ability. Some thrive when they give themselves an occasional break from their good habits; others when they never break the chain. No wonder habit formation is so hard.

The most important thing is to know ourselves, and to choose the strategies that work for us.
Before you begin, identify a few habits that you’d like to adopt, or changes you’d like to make. Then, as you read, consider what steps you want to try. You may even want to note today’s date on your book’s flyleaf, so you’ll remember when you began the process of change.
To help you shape your habits, I regularly post suggestions on my blog, and I’ve also created many resources to help you make your life better than before. But I hope that the most compelling inspiration is the book you hold in your hands.

I see habits through the lens of my own experience, so this ac- count is colored by my particular personality and interests. “Well,” you might think, “if everyone forms habits differently, why should I bother to read a book about what someone else did?”

During my study of habits and happiness, I’ve noticed something surprising: I often learn more from one person’s idiosyncratic experiences than I do from scientific studies or philosophical treatises. For this reason, Better Than Before is packed with individual examples of habit changes. You may not be tempted by Nutella, or travel too much for work, or struggle to keep a gratitude journal, but we can all learn from each other.
It’s simple to change habits, but it’s not easy.

I hope that reading Better Than Before will encourage you to harness the power of habits to make change in your own life. Whenever you read this, and wherever you are, you’re in the right place to begin.

IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO BEGIN
Some habit-formation strategies are familiar and obvious—like Monitoring or Scheduling—but others took me more time to understand. As I studied habits, I slowly began to recognize the tremendous importance of the time of beginning.

The most important step is the first step. All those old sayings are really true. Well begun is half done. Don’t get it perfect, get it going. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Nothing is more exhausting than the task that’s never started, and strangely, starting is often far harder than continuing.

That first step is tough. Every action has an ignition cost: getting myself to the gym and changed into my gym clothes can be more challenging than actually working out. That’s why good habits are a tremendous help: they make the starting process automatic.
Without yet having a name for it, in fact, I’d invoked the power of the Strategy of First Steps as I was starting to write this book. I’d spent months reading and taking copious notes, and I had a giant document with a jumble of material about habits. This initial period of research for a book is always exhilarating, but eventually I have to begin the painstaking labor of actual analysis and writing.

What was the most auspicious date to start? I asked myself. The first day of the week, or the month, or the year? Or my birthday? Or the start of the school year? Then I realized that I was beginning to invoke tomorrow logic.

Nope. Begin now. I was ready. Take the first step. It’s enough to begin.
Now is an unpopular time to take a first step. Won’t things be easier—for some not-quite-specified reason—in the future? I have a fantasy of what I’ll be like tomorrow: Future-Gretchen will spontaneously start a good new habit, with no planning and no effort necessary; it’s quite pleasant to think about how virtuous I’ll be, tomorrow. But there is no Future-Gretchen, only Now-Gretchen.

A friend told me about how she used tomorrow logic: “I use a kind of magical thinking to procrastinate. I make up questionable rules like ‘I can’t start working at 10:10, I need to start on the hour’ or ‘It’s already 4:00, it’s too late to start working.’ But the truth is that I should just start.” It’s common to hear people say, “I’ll start my new habit after the holidays are over/I’ve settled into my new job/my kids are a little older.” Or worse, the double-remove: “I’ll start my new habit once I’m back in shape.”

Tomorrow logic wastes time, and also it may allow us to deny that our current actions clash with our intentions. In an argument worthy of the White Queen, we tell ourselves, absolutely, I’m committed to reading aloud to my children, and I will read to them tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow—just not today.

The same tendency can lead us to overcommit to responsibilities that take place in the comfortably distant future—but eventually the future arrives, and then we’re stuck. My father-in-law has a mental habit to correct for that kind of tomorrow logic. He told me, “If I’m asked to do something—give a speech, attend an event—I always imagine that it’s happening next week. It’s too easy to agree to do something that’s six months off, then the time comes, and I’m sorry I agreed to do it.”

When taking the first step toward a new habit, a key question from the Strategy of Distinctions is “Do I prefer to take small steps or big steps?”

Many people succeed best when they keep their starting steps as small and manageable as possible; by doing so, they gain the habit of the habit, and the feeling of mastery. They begin their new yoga routine by doing three poses, or start work on a big writing project by drafting a single sentence in a writing session.

As an exercise zealot, I was pleased when my mother told me that she was trying to make a habit of going for a daily walk.

“But I’m having trouble sticking to it,” she told me.

“How far are you going?”

“Twice around Loose Park,” she told me, “which is about two miles.”

“Try going just once around the park,” I suggested. That worked. When she started smaller, she was able to form the habit.

Small steps can be particularly helpful when we’re trying to do something that seems overwhelming. If I can get myself to take that first small step, I usually find that I can keep going. I invoked this principle when I was prodding myself to master Scrivener, a writers’ software program. Scrivener would help me organize my enormous trove of notes, but I dreaded starting: installing the software; synchronizing between my laptop and desktop computers; and most difficult, figuring out how to use it.

Each day gave me a new opportunity to push the task off until tomorrow. Tomorrow, I’d feel like dealing with it. “Start now,” I finally thought. “Just take the first step.” I started with the smallest possible step, which was to find the website where I could buy the software. Okay, I thought. I can do that. And then I did. I had a lot of hard work ahead of me—it’s a Secret of Adulthood: things often get harder before they get easier—but I’d started. The next day, with a feeling of much greater confidence and calm, I watched the tutorial video. Then I created my document. And then—I started my book.
However, some people do better when they push themselves more boldly; a big challenge holds their interest and helps them persist. A friend was determined to learn French, so he moved to France for six months.

Along those lines, the Blast Start can be a helpful way to take a first step. The Blast Start is the opposite of taking the smallest possible first step because it requires a period of high commitment. It’s demanding, but its intensity can energize a habit. For instance, after reading Chris Baty’s book No Plot? No Problem!—which explains how to write a novel in a month—I wrote a novel in thirty days, as a way to spark my creativity. This kind of shock treatment can’t be maintained forever, but it’s fun and gives momentum to the habit. A twenty-one-day project, a detox, a cleanse, an ambitious goal, a boot camp—by tackling more instead of less for a certain period, I get a surge of energy and focus. (Not to mention bragging rights.) In particular, I love the retreat model. Three times, I’ve set aside a few days to work on a book during every waking hour, with breaks only for meals and for exercise. These periods of intensity help fuel my daily writing habit.

However, a Blast Start is, by definition, unsustainable over the long term. It’s very important to plan specifically how to shift from the intensity of the Blast Start into the habit that will continue indefinitely.

There’s no right way or wrong way, just whatever works.

Interesting, but there are better books on habits
By Gem
I have loved all of Gretchen Rubin's books and pre-ordered this one with great anticipation. It is interesting and can be insightful, but as someone already familiar with habits after reading The Power of Habit (highly recommend!!), this had two major flaws for me and I would recommend reading other books on habits first.

First, Rubin attempts to break down people's personalities to ascertain what methods will work best for different people, which would be incredibly helpful if her framework of the Four Tendencies worked. For me, it fails because people don't easily fall into those 4 categories - I think it might be more correct to say that in some situations people need external commitment (Obliger), and in other situations those same people are going to reject any rules (Rebel). But I think its very, very unusual that one person is one "Tendency" in all situations and for this reason, her constant reference to the framework in many ways detracted instead of helped me think about habits and how I might apply the various strategies. As she notes herself, Rubin is a very unique person and I think the fact that she is an Upholder in all situations is probably the exception, not the rule.

My second critique is that because Rubin herself is so unique and as a person completely without vice, she isn't able to clearly demonstrate the power of habit. Her method of writing is to combine research with personal stories. In her Happiness books, I found that method to be very successful. Here, however, she can't use herself as a guinea pig because she has few major habits to change; somehow she does not struggle at all with food, sleep, alcohol, exercise, etc. in the way many people do. So instead she uses her strategies to change small habits, which didn't come across as very dramatic to me because they aren't as difficult to change. Had she been able to point to at least one major habit to change and demonstrated the process and the challenges and ultimate success of doing so, it would have been much more compelling. It is as not hard to set an alarm every day to make yourself meditate as it is to completely change your diet (for most people, that is. For her that somehow was not a struggle).

If you are really interested in habits, and you should be because habits are fascinating, I would start with the Power of Habit.

Mixed - Some helpful insights w/ too many anecdotes
By ESBeesting
I have mixed feelings about this book. On the upside, there are a lot of interesting insights and helpful 'customizable' frameworks that can help you build healthy habits... Such as the Upholder/Obliger/Rebel/Questioner and Abstainer/Moderator concepts. However, all this could be summed up in a dozen pages or so and the takeaway messages would be much more clear and crisp.

Unfortunately, personal examples and anecdotes are (over)used for every point. I know way more about Gretchen's life, thoughts, and feelings than I want to... In fact, sometimes it felt like I was reading her personal diary (at one point she reminded herself of her Number One Commandment: "Be Gretchen"... Come on!) which was uncomfortable and a huge waste of time... so I ultimately had to scroll through pages at a time to just get back to the core messages that could help the READER work on their habits -- and not waste time on hearing how Gretchen and her friends and family were so successful in forming/maintaining their own habits.

Not sure if I'd recommend buying the book and wasting your time reading all of it or if I'd just recommend reading reviews and articles that cut through the cr*p and just explain her basic but very helpful habit forming frameworks, which are truly insightful and applicable to everyday life.

Wanted to like it more
By Stefanie
I am a big fan of Gretchen Rubin. I visit her blog regularly and get her daily emails. I have devoured her previous books with multiple readings. I was very much looking forward to this one as I am always looking to create new habits and shed the bad ones. But if I am being honest, I found this book a bit of a letdown. I wanted to like it more. I felt that the author sounded whiny and very opinionated. At times, it felt judgmental. Overall, I did find some of the tips useful (and some dialogue engaging) but I would be more inclined to recommend "The Power of Habit" to those who are interested in changing a behavior. It's a great book with much discussion of the science behind habits and how to break them.
Save your $$ on this one and visit Gretchen's blog instead. Download the pdfs associated with the book like the habits manifesto, etc. They are much more helpful and summarize the book without the need to read it and spend the money.

The House of Morgan: An American Banking Dynasty and the Rise of Modern Finance, by Ron Chernow

Published to critical acclaim twenty years ago, and now considered a classic, The House of Morgan is the most ambitious history ever written about American finance. It is a rich, panoramic story of four generations of Morgans and the powerful, secretive firms they spawned, ones that would transform the modern financial world. Tracing the trajectory of J. P. Morgan’s empire from its obscure beginnings in Victorian London to the financial crisis of 1987, acclaimed author Ron Chernow paints a fascinating portrait of the family’s private saga and the rarefied world of the American and British elite in which they moved—a world that included Charles Lindbergh, Henry Ford, Franklin Roosevelt, Nancy Astor, and Winston Churchill. A masterpiece of financial history—it was awarded the 1990 National Book Award for Nonfiction and selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the Twentieth Century—The House of Morgan is a compelling account of a remarkable institution and the men who ran it, and an essential book for understanding the money and power behind the major historical events of the last 150 years.

J. P. From Library Journal
Chernow vividly portrays the influence that the Morgan banks have had on the history of the Western economy since the late 18th century. The epic story of the development of the American industrial experience is inextricably related to the history of the Morgan banks. Though this fascinating story is virtually the same as that told by Kathleen Bunk in Morgan Grenfell 1838-1988 ( LJ 12/89), Chernow adds color and personality with an emphasis on the 20th-century development of the bank. Working with recently discovered Morgan archives, he reveals institutional details long hidden by the protective secrecy of the family. This superb history will be an important book. Review
Winner of the National Book Award

“As a portrait of finance, politics and the world of avarice and ambition on Wall Street, the book has the movement and tension of an epic novel. It is, quite simply, a tour de force.”—The New York Times Book Review

“As informative and entertaining a history, especially of the period from 1880 to 1930, as this reviewer has ever read . . . Nowhere has our tenuous financial system been better described than by Chernow.”—John Rothchild, Los Angeles Times Book Review

“Chernow deftly mixes biography with economics and explicates arcane matters of high finance with sparkling clarity. . . . A fascinating historical journey from Charles Dickens’ London to Tom Wolfe’s New York.”—David M. Kennedy, The Atlantic Monthly

“An astonishingly detailed and fascinating story of the Morgan banks and the men who have run them. Chernow uses his gift for description to bring out vividly the personalities of his principals.”—Don Keown, San Francisco Chronicle

“Epic . . . Chernow melds deep insights into the life and times of Morgan bankers over 150 years with the flow of world history and the growth of banking and finance. With rich detail and warmth, he brings to life the defunct species of gentleman banker.”—Bill Barnhart, Chicago Tribune

Possibly the best business history ever written
By A Customer
Ron Chernow's "The House of Morgan" is both an engaging history of the Morgan banks and a brilliant account of the growth of global finance from Victorian times through the late 1980's. It's every bit as enjoyable as Chernow's "The Warburgs," but provides a better analysis than the Warburg book of key business and political developments of the 20th century.
No one should be intimidated by this book's length or the complexity of its subject. Its pages are rich with lively portraits of the sometimes quirky men who ran the Morgan banks, the high and mighty of the world with whom they did business, and the world's many critics of such concentrated economic might. Pierpont and Jack Morgan and their successors at the top get the most detailed treatment, but figures as diverse as Brandeis, Mussolini, Lindbergh (the son-in-law of a top Morgan partner), Bryan, Theodore Roosevelt and Margaret Thatcher all play a part in the story, not to mention interesting but lesser-known figures like Ferdinand Pecora, Judge Harold Medina and central bankers from Britain, Germany, Italy and Japan.
As a backdrop to the Morgan saga, this book includes accounts of the main events of 20th-century financial history, such as the Panic of 1907, the creation of the Federal Reserve system, the Crash of 1929 and the depression and bank failures that followed it, the New Dealers' attack on banks led by Pecora that resulted in the Glass-Steagall Act and the separation of commercial banking from investment banking, and the rise of hostile takeovers, Eurodollars, petrodollars, Latin American lending, junk bonds and the securitization of debt, all refreshingly written for laymen rather than experts.
"The House of Morgan" has perhaps two overriding themes. The first is that as the years have passed, and the Morgan banks have faced increasing competition, the Morgan bankers' need to maintain their global preeminence has led them to take bigger and bigger risks. Some of these risks have resulted in large financial loss, but more often they have resulted in a loss of both public and customers' confidence, which has eroded the very preeminence that the banks seek to maintain. The second theme is that the top Morgan bankers have consistently underestimated the power of government to control what they do, and even make their lives miserable. From Pierpont on down, they have ignored government at their peril. It's almost a certainty that with the next big economic downturn, the Morgan banks will be attacked again, and I hope that Chernow will be on the scene to provide an account of it.

Amazing Achievement but Somewhat Uneven
By Sheryl L. Katz
Ron Chernow is truly awe-inspiring. This is one of several, incredibly complete biographies that he has written.

At 700 plus pages this is an incredibly long book. Unfortunately it is an uneven read. I became progressively less interested in the book as I went along; however, it was worth the effort to complete.

The first section, which he calls the Baronial Era in banking, is fascinating, and for me it was a page-turner. The Morgan banking house actually began as the George Peabody bank in England, and Junius Morgan was brought over from the US to be his successor. Junius Morgan took the bank to a level far beyond where Peabody had, and then his son JP Morgan Sr. took over. JP Morgan Sr (Pierpont) is the name most associated with Morgan banking, and he was an enormously powerful and colorful character. This was the infamous age of the "Robber Barons" the rise of American railroads, big steel, and the oil industry. Pierpont was at the center of it, commanding industry while collecting art, building yachts and cavorting with women. It makes a great story.

Pierpont was succeeded by his son JP Morgan Jr(Jack) who headed the bank during what Chernow called the "Diplomatic Era". The book became less interesting. Jack was nowhere near as colorful as his father, and his reign over the bank nowhere near as autocratic. Several other bankers, among them Dwight Morrow (father of Anne Morrow Lindbergh) were major players at the bank. The bank played a huge role on the international stage in this era, and while it had strong ties to England (and its sister bank Morgan Grenfall) it also helped finance the rise of the Nazis, Mussolini and the nationalists in Japan. This was also the period of the roaring twenties and the depression. The story told in the book is not quite as gripping because it doesn't hinge on a single character, but the events impacted and the role played by the bank were enough to keep me reading with interest and occassionally complete absorption.

The third era covered was the "Casino Era". As a result of the Glass Steagle Act, the bank split into Morgan Guarantee and Morgan Stanley. This section of the book also tells about the demise of Morgan Grenfall in England. This is essentially the modern era of banking where the investment bankers at Morgan Stanley and Morgan Grenfall became involved in takeover battles and modern securities. Morgan Guarantee became a fairly staid, and boring, commercial bank. This section of the book had the least interesting characters. I found it to be pretty dry. I have read several books about the various takeover battles, so this account, which was more of a survey, lacked the blood and drama of other accounts I have read.

Finally, from the perspective of 2005, the last section of the book, covering the most recent time period, feels a bit dated. I know more about what happened to both Morgan Guarantee and Morgan Stanley than Chernow knew when he wrote the book, so the very last few chapters felt out of date.

Overall it was also interesting to see the interaction between the history of the bank, and social history. The bank originally was very "white shoe", male and protestant. It hired its first Jewish banker in 1963. Pierpont and Jack were quite anti-Semitic. Yet, within its confines, the bank was also a meritocracy and afforded many of its employees entree into the upper classes.

Although, it can be a bit of a slog at times, if you are interested in the world of banking and finance, or the history of the 19th and 20th century, this is an excellent book.

Not all it's cracked up to be
By Randall Whitcomb
This book is enormous, and based on the gushing of some of the other reviewers, one wonders if they rate on quantity rather than quality. While it is a huge tome, and it should be considering the enormity of the subject, I repeatedly felt myself looking for more detail.
Chernow has a habit of putting a few details in, then glossing over the key points, and editorializing on his own to make the vignette correspond to his thesis. His thesis seems to be this: Morgan (whichever one) was a good man in a dirty business and his monopolistic tendancies were for the moral betterment of humanity. The broader thesis is that the banking titans have been cut down to size for the betterment of the average citizen.
Unfortunately I find much of this posturing nothing more than cheerleading for the rich establishment types that Chernow obviously reveres! He neglects to even mention Morgan's involvement with Nikola Tesla at Wardencliffe, yanking out Tesla's funding when it became clear to him that Tesla was working to provide free energy, not the kind that Morgan could monopolize. He leaves out much more as well, such as Morgan's rather shady involvement in Japan at the end of WW II with Herbert Hoover where they managed to gain preferential treatment in the re-emerging Japanese economy... in alliance with Japanese monopolists eager to preserve their power and control.
It is incredible how Chernow couches Morgan's ruthless monopolist tendancies in terms that make them sound like he was a benign visionary! His attack on the Glass-Steagall act is also certain to make him a darling of the bankers. I wish he had just presented the facts, and replaced his "apologies" with MORE facts!
At any rate, I learned from it, but I recommend viewing much of it with a very jaded eye.

Feeling a difference...and I'm only on the 1st chapter!
By Becky Pourchot
I ordered this book about a week ago to help with some severe anxiety( as a result I've been having some uncomfortable health related side effects). I'm honestly no more then 29 pages in and feel as if its helping.

I have coupled the exercises in this book with a new daily yoga regime, and already I'm finding myself more at ease, more accepting of myself, and more patient with my kids. Its really helping.

The simplicity of this book is key. We're not aiming for enlightenment here, just peace of mind and a state of physical and mental calm...no lofty goals, just a sense that things are okay.

Most exercises (so far) involve gently rethinking things, and letting oneself feel the positive moments in life. The writing is based on neuropsychological research, which means the aim is to really reshape the pathways of the your brain...making permanent long term change.

This book is a valuable tool for anyone who is anxiety prone, prone to depression, or just prone negative self talk. This is one I will always carry with me. Wonderful, simple stuff! My thanks to the author!!

A Self-Help Book That Really Helps!
By Tom Moon
In my work as a psychotherapist I rarely recommend self-help books, because most of them aren't worth the paper they're printed on. But once in a while a book comes along that really has the power to change our lives for the better. One such book is Just One Thing, by Rick Hanson. Rick is both a neuropsychologist and a meditation teacher, and he uses the new findings of neuroscience to show how very simple mind-training techniques, practiced for just a few minutes daily, can radically improve our well-being.

The science behind the practices involves a simple principle: every time you use your mind you alter the structure of your brain. Everything you pay attention to, everything you think, feel and want, every time you react to what happens to you - all of these things sculpt your brain. Busy regions of the brain get more blood flow, and little-used neural connections wither away. "Neurons that fire together wire together" - every time you repeat any mental activity, you strengthen it and make it easier to become a habit.

What this means is that if your mind regularly focuses on worries, anger, or self-criticism, then your brain develops neural structures supporting anxiety, low self-esteem, and impatience with others. But if you regularly focus your attention on noticing that you're all right now, not taking life personally, cultivating gratitude, or letting go - then gradually your brain re-shapes itself to support calm strength, self-confidence, and inner peace. So, for instance, regularly taking the time for mindfulness pauses activates the part of the brain that puts the brakes on negative feelings, and thus lifts mood. Other practices, such as taking in the good, feeling safer, relaxing anxiety about imperfection, or filling the hole in your heart, support and increase your sense of security and worth, resilience, effectiveness, and well-being.

This book is very user-friendly. Each chapter title names a specific practice, and the rest of the chapter, which is never more than a few pages, tells you why to do it, and then how to do it. The practices themselves usually involve actions you take in your mind, such as reflecting, concentrating, or focusing your attention, and they only take a few minutes to do per day. But doing them regularly gradually re-shapes the brain to reduce stress and unhappiness, and to develop positive qualities. They're exactly like physical exercise; any single time you work out, not much changes, but over time your health and strength improve.

We all understand that we have to make effort regularly over time to do things like learning how to drive a car or play basketball, but we typically think the mind should just work fine on its own, without any effort or discipline. Rick Hanson shows us how some very down-to-earth actions can turn an unruly mind into one that is focused, strong, and happy. I recommend this book highly.

Clear, simple gems for changing your brain
By Marsha Lucas
In Just One Thing, neuropsychologist and meditation teacher Rick Hanson presents you with 52 simple practices for changing your brain, and changing the way you live your life. His focus is on cultivating what is positive, but this is not just some "feel good" collection of helpful hints -- there is real substance here, pared down to what is essential for building on your strengths, becoming more resilient, and coming to peace with your emotions. I enjoy referring my patients as well as my friends to Rick's work -- his work is warm, engaging, and well-informed by his training in the brain-behavior relationship.
