This is the real thing.

I have participated in Selco's programs for years now... of all the survival stuff out there (and I've been at this for some time), Selco's is the best I've found. A lot of stuff out there is just "everyone saying the same thing", and some of it is truly dangerous MIS-information... but Selco's stuff is accurate and real. He is truly a SHTF/real civilian wartime survivor. His writing is simple, to the point, common sense, and easy to understand/follow. He makes you think about the realities of SHTF survival... things you likely didn't consider, and wouldn't expect. It's a no fluff, no time wasted, eyes-snap-open, "whoa, I never thought of that!" program that will absolutely get you more prepared for a real situational meltdown than you might have thought possible, and anyone of any background can understand it. If you really want to know SHTF survival, get this book and subscribe to his online courses as well. You won't regret a minute of it, nor any dollar spent on it.

The truth of war and violence from the perspective of a civilian caught up in the mess - what to do - what not to do.

As a seasoned survivalist I thoroughly recommend this book for A) survialist novices, B) survivalists who have not experienced being in a war zone, C) survivalists who have not seriously considered the level of violence that will occur during a squeeze on resources without rule of law.

It explores the basics and the reality that you may face, Better to consider this all now, when you are safe, rather than have an unpleasant surprise when it happens. It is rare to find a book that deals with the realities of war and violence with the frankness from one who has successfully survived it. Most war survivors will not retell what happens and advise what you might need to do or prepare for. Thanks Selco.

I took the survival boot camp course and found it to be worth every penny. Selco lived through a modern collapse. His insight, honesty, and willingness to share his experience make his courses, forums, and material imformative and relevant. This guy is not some super commando high speed death machine. He is a real guy who experienced fear and felt weakness. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

WOW ! A self-help book that actually HELPS!!

This book is worth its weight in gold. No hocus-pocus quick fixes here - just common sense in short chapters on a myriad of methods human beings use to screw life up for themselves - or should I say "ourselves"? I saw myself on many pages, to one degree or another, and the "Usable Insights" were actually useful!! Very few authors go as far at stripping away the delusions people hide behind as Dr. Goulston. For anyone who REALLY wants to get to the nitty-gritty about how self-sabotage is hurting him/her, this book is a true gift!

About the Author
Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev�was born in 1818 in the Province of Orel, and suffered during his childhood from a tyrannical mother. After the family had moved to Moscow in 1827 he entered Petersburg University where he studied philosophy. When he was nineteen he published his first poems and, convinced that Europe contained the source of real knowledge, went to the University of Berlin. After two years he returned to Russia and took his degree at the University of Moscow. In 1843 he fell in love with Pauline Garcia-Viardot, a young Spanish singer, who influenced the rest of his life; he followed her on her singing tours in Europe and spent long periods in the French house of herself and her husband, both of whom accepted him as a family friend. He sent his daughter by a sempstress to be brought up among the Viardot children. After 1856 he lived mostly abroad, and he became the first Russian writer to gain a wide reputation in Europe; he was a well-known figure in Parisian literary circles, where his friends included Flaubert and the Goncourt brothers, and an honorary degree was conferred on him at Oxford. His series of six novels reflect a period of Russian life from 1830s to the 1870s: they are�Rudin�(1855),�A House of Gentlefolk�(1858),�On the Eve�(1859; a Penguin Classic),�Fathers and Sons�(1861),�Smoke�(1867) and�Virgin Soil�(1876). He also wrote plays, which include the comedy�A Month in the Country; short stories and�Sketches from a Hunter’s Album�(a Penguin Classic); and literary essays and memoirs. He died in Paris in 1883 after being ill for a year, and was buried in Russia.

Isaiah Berlin, O.M., C.B.E., first President of Wolfson College, Oxford, from 1966 to 1975, is a Fellow of All Souls. He was a Fellow of New College from 1938 to 1950 and Professor of Social and Political Theory at Oxford from 1957 to 1967. He served as President of the British Academy of Arts and Letters. He holds honorary degrees from the universities of Brandies, Cambridge, Columbia, East Anglia, Glasgow, Harvard, Hull, Jerusalem, Liverpool, London and Tel Aviv. Sir Isaiah's work covers a wide variety of subjects, but most of his work has appeared in periodicals and symposia.�Russian Thinkers�is the first of four volumes edited by Henry Hardy which bring together for the first time all of Isaiah Berlin's major essays (excluding those already published in�Four Essays on Liberty�and�Vico and Herder). Isaiah Berlin's other contributions to Russian studies include his translation of Ivan Turgenev's�First Love�(available from Penguin) and his Introduction to Alexander Herzen's memoirs,�My Past and Thoughts. Sir Isaiah was awarded the Jerusalem Prize in 1979 for the expression in his writings of the idea of the freedom of the individual in society.

Chitaite kogda pianii!

I read this book one very, very cold winter's night in St.Petersburg, sitting at a sleazy 24-hour bar by the Gulf of Finland, where I was the only guest. I sat there drinking numerous beers, reading this novella - and was practically in tears by the time I had finished it. By then I'd gotten unreasonably buzzed, so I stumbled over to the barlady (who, needless to say, was called Natasha), and congratulated her on being Russian, for that meant that she'd been born in the same country where Turgenev wrote this lovely, tragic, wonderfully sentimental story. I felt stupid the next morning, but was still overwhelmed with the beauty of what I'd read. I am uncertain how much the setting I read this book in had to do with how much I liked it, and I wonder what it'd be like to read it now, sober, at home, but I suspect it of being pretty damn brilliant no matter where you read it. Well, maybe except if you're from California or something. At any rate - "First Love" rocks.

Turgenev's novella, "First Love" is a compact, but intense, fiction whose realism blends with its literary allusions, dream-like qualities, and point of view to create a work of undeniable power. This is a novella which questions the boundaries between life and art, asking us all the while where love resides in self, family, and society.
"First Love" begins in a style reminiscent of Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales." Following a long dinner party, three men are in the middle of a calm conversation, when the unnamed host proposes that they all share the stories of their first loves. Two men's stories are quickly dismissed, leaving Vladimir Petrovich, a pensive middle aged man, who offers to give his story after having a chance to write it out. Vladimir's story concerns a summer when he was 16. Living in the country with a dissatisfied mother and an agonizingly Byronic father, Vladimir happens upon a dispossessed 21-year-old princess, Zinaida. From her shabby home, the beautiful and mysterious Zinaida commands a court of six men of varying ages and backgrounds - a poet, a doctor, a minor nobleman, a soldier, and Vladimir - each of whom is desperate to win her affection at any cost. For his own part, Vladimir attempts throughout the story to discover the roots of his own fascination with Zinaida.
Part of the appeal of "First Love" is its point of view. It is a true first person narrative - we only ever know Vladimir's experience - the effect is a realistic account of the infatuation, love, doubt, and inner turmoil of a young man told through the hindsight of age and experience. Perhaps I've grown too accustomed to omniscient narration recently, but the desire that Turgenev evokes to know the minds of others, which of course in reality, we cannot, is both appealing and frustrating.
Turgenev's literary background is broad and multicultural - he evinces knowledge of Russian, British, German, and French, Classic and Romantic traditions - all of which give us the sense that the tale being told is at once extremely personal and terribly universal. "First Love" is well-worth the investment of the short time it takes to read.

Amazing piece of literature

At the risk of not sounding manly, I must admit I love Russian literature! And, Turgenev is one of my favorites. I've also felt that he has never been fully appreciated to the degree he should be. When most people think of Russian literature obvisously authors like Dostoevsky (my favorite author), Tolstoy, and Chekhov come to mind but one rarely hears someone speak highly of Turgenev, or maybe it's merely the people whom I hang around with. "First Love" is so wonderfully written, it's so full of charm, wit, humor, and basic human emotions that as one goes on reading we almost relive our own first love experience. We think back to when we were young and how we felt when we had that crush on someone. How the whole world seemed different and exciting. Well, Turgenev managed to recapture those feelings we may have put aside. The story is about Vladimir Petrovichand he tells how he has fallen for Zinaida, the daughter of a Princess. He takes us along with him as he recalls his memories of what it was like when he first met her. And how he also was able to grow up and learn from this experience. I can't praise this book highly enough. A wonderful read!
Very good translation by Isaiah Berlin. If after reading this you want to read more by Turgenev try "A Month In The Country" and "Spring Torrents".

Another fantastic book by Carey.

He has done such a great job of studying the church, culture and leadership today. This book is BEYOND packed with material, but all very on point - like any of Carey's writing (articles, podcast, other books). We got this on audio and bought the book as well so we could reference many of the quotes, points and suggestions. I love that it is written as a book that can be a "guidebook" for discussion for ministry and leadership teams (councils).

For those who desire to understand and evolve with the rapidly changing landscape of "church" and "ministry, " this is a MUST READ. Carey not only talks about what is happening and why, but what to do about it and gives examples of it in action. He has application questions at the end of each section and in the audio answers the questions (bonus!).

I will say the material is so packed with insights and food for thought, we had to take a break every 2 chapters to let it soak in. It is the book that can be read and then used as a learning handbook and then referenced. Very helpful. Thank you, Carey, for all your insights!

If you Lead in Ministry...just buy this now...

LOVE THIS BOOK from Carey Nieuwhof! As a pastor who happens to listen to his podcast and be a big fan of his blog- the truth is, I figured I'd like it. I'm probably a 'ringer' for a customer...HOWEVER...that being said...I might LIKE something...and not finish it. Or I might enjoy something and if it's TOO familiar to me...I'll shelve it and 'come back to it later' (which happens with the regularity of a leap year- though this IS a leap year...so maybe there's a correlation).

Carey's book is written in a way, that to me it FEELS like more of a conversation (which since that's in the subtitle...I suppose that means it's successful in its aim). There are times where there are natural pauses- which are great (and dangerous(see previous paragraph) (are you allowed to do parenthesis IN parenthesis) for me...to stop...reflect...consider. And then move on...either later...after a minute...or a day or a week. And to be able to hop around to conversations that are a little more appropriate or helpful in certain seasons is fantastic.

It's an 'easy' read- but not an easy answer book. It's the friend who pushes and prods you to be better. You want that friend in your life. Enjoy.

If you are helped by Carey's blog and podcasts then this book is for you too! But it goes beyond his blog by enabling the church leader to have much needed conversations with their congregation's leaders. I appreciate his emphasis in the book -- it's not growth for growth's sake but "for the sake of being effective in our mission and vision of reaching people who need to know the love of Christ in their lives."

I won't go through all seven conversations but will give a taste of what is offered. For example, Conversation #1 is "Why Are We Not Growing Faster?" Carey gives "Ten Reasons Your Church Isn't Growing (or growing as quickly as you'd like)" then he moves on to "Structure Bigger to Grow Bigger." Each chapter ends with Discussion Questions that help your team "Talk About It" then "Get Practical" and conclude with "Make It Happen."

This book deals with both the theoretical and practical side of helping a congregation be healthy and see growth for the sake of Christ's Kingdom. For that reason I highly recommend it.

Turgid too often

Too many uses of abstract generalised terms.

Attention authors - especially academics: while it's true that generalisations 'cover all bases', if you use ones that are too broad, they end up saying NOTHING.
They become empty vessels with NO INFORMATION in them: like some hot air balloon become so broad and expansive there's more air than balloon!

The topic of qualitative research - especially data analysis - is already quite abstract, because it is about data, concepts, the relationships between concepts and so on.

When writing about such an abstract topic, this author used far too many generalisations and abstractions without attaching EXAMPLES that ensured the information MADE SENSE - actually CONVEYED INFORMATION (the purpose of a textbook).

Here's just one MILD example of thousands. The author is describing suggested steps to take when applying the method of 'Narrative Analysis' to data. After writing earlier about finding themes in the data, she says:

"4. Make some notes about the thematic ideas you have developed from the transcript. Then use them to indicate where the participant provides accounts for his or her actions and to exhibit the general structure of the story. Also look for any interruptions/discontinuities that may contradict the themes."

So WTF does this mean exactly?

Surely these concepts are abstract enough without describing them with such flocculesence as this!

Authors like this one - a mild perpetrator, it has to be said - make students' lives hell. Worse, they deprive society of knowledge. Every academic these days should be made to write a yearly paper on Orwell's essay Politics and the English Language.

Apart from that the book seems comprehensive (though I'm no expert - STILL!).

Unfortunately, 1000 x zero is still zero: there's no point covering a topic comprehensively if you don't explain things CLEARLY.

Arthur Ford knew that life after death is real, but he could not prove it. However, Michael Newton, using 7000 cases under hypnosis, has clarified what happens after death. Read his book first, and then you will want to read Ford's book, which contains interesting and corroborating stories from one of the 20th Century's greatest channelers.

Finally, I understood, and also felt understood

I was around 12 years old, in Switzerland, when I was seeking information on this topic. I had paranormal experiences since early childhood, but did not quite understand them yet, nor could I talk to anyone about them. One day, I discovered this book (in German) in our small town school library and I soaked up the content like a sponge. Suddenly, and finally, I felt understood and not so "crazy" anymore :) This book became my anchor and foundation for everything that would follow. I'm 50 now and still hold a torch for this fantastic book :)

Wildly Nostalgic!

This book is my new favourite book. It is so neat to read about Audrey from a personal aspect. The recipes are interesting/fun, and I am so excited to try them. I love the history and stories that accompany them. With most cases in life, that is what is more important than the recipe itself so it is fun to hear about them. I loved flipping through and seeing all the photographs, as well. This is a beautiful book, tribute, and memoir of life with Audrey from the person who knows her best, and I am so thankful that this was published. I found myself smiling after reading certain paragraphs, and you could really feel her personality behind story that was told. An absolutely wonderful read that I will absolutely continue to read and go back to, and utilize recipes from. Beautiful book.

My daughter wanted this book so badly. I got it as soon as it was released. My daughter then cooked Audrey's favorite spaghetti recipe. We went shopping picked the best tomatoes , and carrots. Dinner that night was delightful. My daughter is loves Audrey watching all her movies over and over. I just purchased her the dvd sets. For only 17 she appreciates the person Audrey was. What's strange is my daughter looks a lot like her. This book is wonderful and the family photos are just a wonderful added touch. Only wish I could have had it signed because it would have made my daughter just so darn happy. Thank you for sharing so much of who she was.

Delicious Audrey book

Just when you thought you'd read everything about Audrey there could ever be, here comes a charming book written by someone who should know his Audrey— her son, Luca Dotti. In "Audrey at Home" (subtitled "Memories of my Mother's Kitchen") he tells us that Audrey may not have been the best cook, but whatever she served was made with love. Love indeed makes everything taste delicious.

This is not a recipe book with stories, this is a book of stories (and many photos) with recipes. Luca says if you only ever prepare two dishes, they should be Audrey's flour-less Chocolate Cake with Whipped Cream and Penne with Ketchup (which doesn't sound half bad— the ketchup is just a splash). Many of the recipes are very continental and perhaps a little too formal for the way we cook today, but this is cookbook reading of the best kind— no cooking required.

Luca's memories of his parents are seen through a child's eyes. His life in Italy was carefree until his parents' divorce when Luca was twelve. Despite the split he remained close to his father, as did Audrey and Andrea. I always had the feeling Andrea Dotti was a bit of a bounder and could never fathom what Audrey saw in him. Luca reminds us that love can be blind.

Audrey retired from films for many years to raise her two children, first in Italy, then in Switzerland. She loved her home there, "La Paisable", with its many gardens. The book's photos are candids, snapshots and/or family photographs with added snippets of recipe cards and notes. It's a privilege to get to know this out-of-the-public-eye Audrey, and I thank Luca for sharing. Of course we love her even more.
